that any of us should appear at all to be debarred by them from any place whatsoever. But the grace of God played the part of a general against them, and rescued the weak, and set in opposition steadfast pillars, able through their endurance to draw to themselves the whole attack of the evil one; who went into close combat, enduring every form of reproach and punishment; who, counting many things as few, hurried on to Christ, truly showing that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that shall be revealed to us. 5.1.7 "And first they nobly endured what was brought upon them in heaps by the whole populace, shouts and blows and draggings and robberies and stonings and imprisonments, and all that a savage mob is wont to inflict on enemies and foes, 5.1.8 and indeed having been brought up to the marketplace by the chiliarch and the ruling authorities of the city, they were questioned before the entire crowd, and having confessed, they were shut up in the prison until the arrival of the governor; 5.1.9 Afterwards, when they were brought before the governor, and he was using all his cruelty against us, Vettius Epagathus, one of the brethren, who had obtained a fullness of love towards God and his neighbor, whose manner of life was so scrupulously exact that, although a young man, he was equal to the testimony of the presbyter Zacharias; for he had walked in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless and was untiring in every service to his neighbor, having great zeal for God and being fervent in spirit; being such a man, he could not bear the judgment so unreasonably made against us, but was greatly indignant and demanded to be heard himself in defense of the brethren, that there is nothing godless or impious among us. 5.1.10 But when those around the tribunal cried out against him, for he was a man of distinction, and the governor did not tolerate the just demand so put forward by him, but only asked this, if he too were a Christian, and when he confessed with a most clear voice, he too was taken up into the lot of the martyrs, having been named the advocate of the Christians, but having the Advocate in himself, the Spirit of Zacharias, which he showed through the fullness of his love, being pleased to lay down his own life for the defense of the brethren; for he was and is a genuine disciple of Christ, following the Lamb wherever He goes. 5.1.11 "From there the rest were distinguished, and those who were ready for martyrdom became manifest, who also with all eagerness fulfilled the confession of martyrdom, but there also appeared the unready and untrained and still weak, unable to bear the strain of a great contest; of whom about ten in number miscarried; who also caused us great grief and immeasurable sorrow and checked the eagerness of the rest who had not been seized; who, although suffering all kinds of terrible things, nevertheless were present with the martyrs and did not abandon them, 5.1.12 Then indeed we were all greatly terrified on account of the uncertainty of the confession, not fearing the punishments inflicted, but looking to the end and dreading that someone might fall away. 5.1.13 Nevertheless, day by day those who were worthy were seized, filling up their number, so that all the zealous were gathered from the two churches, and those through whom affairs here were chiefly held together; 5.1.14 and certain pagan servants of our households were also seized, since the governor had publicly ordered that we all be sought out; who also, through a stratagem of Satan, fearing the tortures which they saw the saints suffering, and being urged to this by the soldiers, bore false witness against us of Thyestean feasts and Oedipodean unions and things which it is not lawful for us either to speak or to think of, nor even to believe that anything of the sort ever happened among men. 5.1.15 And when these rumors spread, all grew furious against us, so that even if any before had been moderate on account of friendship, they then were greatly enraged and gnashed their teeth at us;
