in your midst, you will no longer see evil." All of which more properly applies to the Lord Christ. Paragraph And this man is clearly signifying the epiphany of the Lord and the destruction of idols and the conversion of the nations to God through Christ. 5.156 This tenth prophet, Haggai, was also himself deemed worthy to foretell concerning the Lord Christ, as in the person of Zerubbabel, the things fitting for the Lord Christ, saying: "And I will make you as a signet, for I have chosen you, says the Lord Almighty," just as John the Evangelist also says: "For on him God the Father has set his seal." 5.157 This is the temple that was built by Zerubbabel after the return, about which Zechariah says: "The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house; his hands shall also complete it," concerning which the Jews also said to the Lord: "It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will you raise it up in three days?" Paragraph And this man, in the person of Zerubbabel, foretells the things concerning the Lord Christ, through whom the salvation of all nations comes. 5.158 This eleventh prophet, Zechariah, was also himself deemed worthy to foretell concerning the coming of Christ, saying thus: "Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion; shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem. Behold, your king is coming to you; righteous and having salvation, he is humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey." He spoke this oracle hyperbolically concerning Zerubbabel, but its fulfillment properly occurred in the case of the Lord Christ. Again he says: "And I will say to him, ‘What are these wounds between your hands?’ And he will say, ‘The wounds I received in the house of my friends,’" and a little later again: "I will strike the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock will be scattered." The Lord also mentions this oracle at the time of the passion, when he was about to be betrayed, saying that it had been spoken of himself. Paragraph This one also, saying nothing strange, holds to the same things as the others, foretelling the coming of the Lord Christ, who showed in himself also the beginning of the second state. Glory to the God of all for ever. Amen. 5.159 This twelfth prophet, Malachi, was also himself deemed worthy to prophesy concerning the things of the economy of the Lord Christ; and he also says thus: "For from the rising of the sun to its setting my name has been glorified among the nations, and in every place incense is offered to my name, and a pure offering; for my name is great among the nations, says the Lord Almighty." And again he says: "Behold, I send my messenger, and he will prepare the way before your face." And the Lord applied this oracle both to himself and to John the Baptist. 5.160 Again the same prophet says: "But for you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness shall rise with healing in its wings. You shall go out leaping like calves released from their bonds and you shall tread down the lawless; for they will be ashes under the soles of your feet, on the day when I act, says the Lord Almighty. And behold, I will send you Elijah the Tishbite before the great and manifest day of the Lord comes," as the Lord said to the Jews that, if you are willing to accept it, concerning John the Baptist, "he is Elijah who is to come." Therefore, having completed, with God, the twelve, we will proceed to the four major ones. Paragraph 5.161 But this one also, not strange things, but things similar to the other eleven, foretold the things that would be through Christ, and again the great and manifest day of the Lord, on which he will send ahead Elijah the Tishbite, he says, who is still living. Glory to God who created all things and is creating them again. Amen. The Text 5.162 All the prophets indeed prophesied and reminded the Jews concerning the promises of God, which he made to the fathers, how he promised to bless all the nations in the seed of Abraham through the economy of the Lord Christ, and how God formerly redeemed them from the slavery of the Egyptians with a high arm and has given them the land of the promise, and
