coming to his ear, he announced, saying that “Believe in Jesus, the one crucified under Pontius Pilate the governor, the pre-existent Son of God and later born of Mary, being the Christ of God and risen from the dead, and that he is coming to judge the living and the dead.” These things this same Joseph clearly reported to me in the narration, as it is truthful to say. But I also heard such a thing from a certain other person, who was still a Jew for fear of the Jews, but often spending time among Christians and both honoring and loving Christians, who accompanied me in the wilderness of Bethel and Ephraim as I was going up from Jericho to the hill country and was conversing with him about the coming of Christ, and he did not contradict. And as I was wondering and asking the reason (for he was both learned in the law and able to contradict), for what reason he does not contradict but is persuaded concerning Christ Jesus our Lord, hearing so many things, this man also revealed to me, that as he was about to die he heard from them 1.345 within hearing of his ear in a whisper that “Jesus Christ, the crucified, the Son of God, is about to judge you.” But let these things concerning these matters and according to this account be set down here by me from true hearing. 10. And Joseph was still sick, and having heard from the elder as I said before along with the others that Jesus Christ will judge you, he was still hardened. But the Lord again, according to his love for mankind, through a vision in a dream says to him, “Behold, I heal you, but having risen, believe.” But having risen again from the sickness, he did not believe. And when he was healthy, the Lord appears to him again in a dream, reproaching him for the reason he did not believe. And the Lord promises him, saying that for the full assurance of faith, if you wish to work any divine sign in my name, call upon me and I will do it. And there was a certain madman in the city, who went about the city naked—I mean in Tiberias—and often, when clothed, he would tear his garment, as is the custom for such people. Therefore Joseph, wishing to make a test of the vision, but still doubting, was held back by shame. So he takes this man inside and, having shut the door, and having taken water into his hand and having sealed the water, he sprinkled it upon the possessed man, saying, “In the name of Jesus of Nazareth, the crucified one, come out of him, O demon, and may he be made well.” And the man, crying out loudly and falling to the ground, foaming much and being convulsed, remained motionless for a long time, and Joseph supposed the man was dead. But after a time, rubbing his forehead, he arose, and having risen and seeing his own nakedness, he tried to hide himself and placed his hands over his shame, no longer bearing to see his own nakedness. And having put on a garment from Joseph himself from those he had, having come to a state of understanding and sound-mindedness, he gave much thanks both to the man and to God, knowing that through him he had received salvation, he proclaimed the man in the city, and this sign became known to the Jews there. And a great rumor followed in the city, of people saying that Joseph, having opened the treasury chests and having found the name of God written and having read it, works great signs. And what was said by them was true, but not as they supposed. But still 1.346 Joseph persisted, being hardened in his heart. But the God who loves mankind, always working out good occasions for those who love him, provides these for the people who are counted worthy for life. 11. For it happened to Joseph himself, after Judah the patriarch grew up, whom we mentioned before (for perhaps he was so called), that for the sake of reward, he gave to Joseph the honor of his mission, the collection of revenues. And with letters this man is sent to the land of the Cilicians; who, having gone up there, from each city of Cilicia the tithes and the

Συμβέβηκε γὰρ αὐτῷ τῷ Ἰωσήπῳ μετὰ τὸ ἁδρυνθῆναι Ἰούδαν τὸν πατριάρχην, ὃν προείπαμεν τάχα γὰρ οὕτως ἐλέγετο, ἀμοιβῆς ἕνεκα γέρας τῷ Ἰωσήπῳ τῆς ἀποστολῆς δοῦναι τὴν ἐπικαρπίαν. καὶ μετ' ἐπιστολῶν οὗτος ἀποστέλλεται εἰς τὴν Κιλίκων γῆν· ὃς ἀνελθὼν ἐκεῖσε ἀπὸ ἑκάστης πόλεως τῆς Κιλικίας τὰ ἐπιδέκατα καὶ τὰς
