you did not eat, and wine and strong drink you did not drink for 40 years. Your garments did not grow old, nor did the sandals on your feet wear out.”

166 After these words and many others worthy of God and filled with divine grace, having written them in a book, he handed it over to the priests to place it beside the covenant of testimony, having appointed Jesus the son of Nave to rule Israel in his place by divine decree, and having sung the second song, which the Lord commanded all the people to learn, handing it down as a great and divine thing for a future memorial. In the 11th month of the 40th year of the journey from Egypt, being the 120th of his life, after blessing everyone, he went up to Mount Nebo, that is Abarim, situated in Moabitis across the Jordan opposite Jericho. And after surveying the land promised to Israel, he died there by the command of God, and was buried in Gai near the house of Peor; and no one knows his burial place. This great seer of God and prophet, instructor and lawgiver of Israel, died at 120 years of age, and his eyes were not dimmed, with good reason; for with them he had seen the divine glory, nor were the features of his face wrinkled because of old age. A prophet like him, as the scripture says, did not arise, to whom the Lord appeared face to face, until John the Baptist. This same God-taught man was the first among men to write a chronicle from Adam to his 120th year, which is the cosmic year 3856 according to this precise chronology. After the death of Moses, the Lord said to Jesus the son of Nave: Arise, cross the Jordan, you and all this people, into the land which I am giving them. Every place on which the sole of your feet shall tread, I will give to you, as I said to Moses, the desert and the Antilebanon as far as the great river Euphrates and as far as the great sea from the setting of the sun will be your borders. And Jesus commanded the scribes to speak to all the people to prepare and get provisions, so that 167 after three days they might cross the Jordan. And he sent from Shittim two men to spy out the land of Jericho and Gai, two cities. And entering Jericho, they lodged with Rahab the harlot, and being sought by the king of Jericho, they were hidden in her house, having sworn to her concerning her safety. And returning to Jesus in Shittim, they reported the results of their spying. And Jesus rose early in the morning from Shittim and came to the Jordan with the people. There, having first purified Israel, he led them across the Jordan after three days, with the ark of the covenant of the Lord going before, along with the priests who carried it; and when only their feet were dipped in the edge of the water, the waters coming down from above stood as one mass, being divided far up upstream towards Kiriath-jearim; and the waters coming down went down into the sea of Arabah, the salt sea, until it failed. And the people stood opposite Jericho. And the priests who carried the ark stood on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan, until all the people had crossed the Jordan on dry ground, and Jesus appointed twelve distinguished men from the sons of Israel by the word of the Lord, and taking twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, they carried them over to the camp for a memorial. And Jesus set up another twelve stones in the Jordan, where the feet of the priests carrying the ark had stood, and they are there to this day. And Jesus commanded the priests, and it happened that as they came out and set their feet on the land, the water came down rushing as it was before. And having come up, they encamped in Gilgal on the east, opposite Jericho. When the kings of the Amorites and the kings by the sea of Phoenicia heard these things, their hearts melted, being astounded in their minds. But Jesus by a divine command circumcised the people with stone knives, all those who had crossed the Jordan, because, it says, for forty-two years Israel had dwelt in the desert, and for this reason there were the
