the perishing. Again, through the parable of the shepherd, he hinted at this. For he did not sit with the ninety-nine sheep and wait for the stray one to come to him, but he himself went, and found it, and having found it he both carried it on his shoulders and brought it back. Do you not see the physicians also doing this very thing? they do not force the sick who are lying on their beds to be brought to their houses, but they themselves run to them. This you also do, beloved, knowing that the present life is short, and if we do not gain these gains, we will have no salvation there. One soul gained can often blot out a mass of countless sins, and become a ransom for us on that day. Consider why prophets, why apostles, why righteous men, why angels were often sent, why the only-begotten Son of God himself came; was it not to save men? was it not to bring back the straying 48.942? This you also do according to your ability, and show all diligence and forethought for the return of the straying. These things I do not cease to exhort you at every gathering, whether you pay attention or do not pay attention, I will not stop speaking. For this is a law for us from God, whether anyone hears or does not hear, to fulfill this ministry. But if you hear and do what is said, we will do this very thing with much pleasure; but if you are negligent and slothful, with much despondency. For to us, indeed, from your disobedience there will be no further danger; for we have fulfilled all our part; but still, even if we are not in danger because we have fulfilled all on our part, we grieve for you being accused on that day. For your hearing will not be without danger, when the addition through works does not happen. Hear, then, how Christ, accusing the teachers who hide the word, also terrified the disciples. For having said, You ought to have put my money with the bankers; and adding, that I on my return would have demanded it back with interest, he showed that after the hearing—for this is the depositing of the money—those who received the teaching must produce interest. And the interest of teaching is nothing other than the demonstration through works. Since, therefore, we too have deposited the money into your hearing, it is necessary, then, for you to return the interest to the master, that is, the salvation of your brothers. So that if you should continue holding only these things that have been said, and producing nothing in yourselves, I fear lest you suffer the same penalty as the one who buried the talent. For he, for this reason, having his feet and hands bound, was led out into the outer darkness, because he did not bring forth to others what he had heard. In order, then, that we may not suffer the same things, let us imitate the one who received the five, and the one who received the two talents; and whether it be necessary to expend word, or money, or bodily labor, or prayer, or anything else whatever for the salvation of our neighbor, let us not hesitate, so that from all sides each of us, having multiplied the talent given to us by God accordingly, may be able to hear that blessed voice, Well done, good and faithful servant, you were faithful over a few things, I will set you over many things; enter into the joy of your Lord. Which may we all attain, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom and with whom to the Father be the glory and the power, together with the Holy Spirit, for ever and ever. Amen.
