And during his reign, Ephesus and Smyrna and many other cities of Asia suffered from a divine scourge, to which he granted many things for their renewal. At that time the great city of Antioch was also shaken by an earthquake, and the temple of Artemis and of Ares and of Herakles was rent asunder, and notable houses fell. The same emperor Claudius lightened for the guilds, that is, the corporations, of the city of Antioch in Syria the liturgy which they provided for the smoke-tax, for the renewal of its roofed colonnades which had been built by Tiberius Caesar. In the beginning of the reign of the same Claudius Caesar, ten years after the ascension of our lord and god Jesus Christ, the first after the holy apostle Peter to receive the ordination of the episcopate of the great city 247 of Antioch in Syria was Euodos, who became patriarch. And during his time they were named Christians, when the same bishop Euodos preached to them and gave them this name. For formerly the Christians were called Nazoreans and were called Galileans. In the eighth year of the reign of the same Claudius Caesar, the Jews made a great persecution against the apostles and their disciples and were plotting tyranny against the Romans. Wherefore, a chiliarch named Festus was first sent against them; and from that time destruction came upon them. For the same emperor Claudius appointed for them a ruler named Felix, who troubled them. And 18 years after the ascension into the heavens of our lord and god Jesus Christ, on the feast of the Pentecost of the same Jews, the priests on that same day heard a human voice saying from the inner sanctuary, which is called the holy of holies, 'We are departing from here.' And the same priests heard this voice spoken a third time, as they were sacrificing, and this became known to the whole nation. And from that time destruction began for the Jews, as Josephus the philosopher of the Hebrews wrote these things, having also said this, that from the time the Jews crucified 248 Jesus, who was a good and just man, if indeed one ought to call such a one a man and not a god, pain did not cease from the land of Judea. The same Josephus set forth these things for the Jews in his Jewish writings. During the reign of the same Claudius, the same Antiochene landowners and citizens sent a petition, asking that they be granted by his divine command to purchase the Olympic games from the Pisans of the land of Greece from the annual revenues of the money left by a certain Sosibius, a senator, their fellow citizen. And the same emperor Claudius granted them to purchase the Olympic games, in the year which according to the Syrian Antiochenes was 92. The same Antiochenes did this because they were aggrieved with the magistrates of the same city on account of the aforementioned revenues, left by Sosibius to their city; concerning which Sosibius the wise chronographer Pausanias set forth that a certain Sosibius, upon his death, left by his will to the great city of the Antiochenes an annual revenue of fifteen talents of gold; which has been written previously in the times of Augustus Octavianus. The revenues were left for the purpose of putting on for the same fellow citizens, every five years, a varied spectacle for 30 days in the month of Hyperberetaios, which is also October, of scenic, thymelic, and tragic performances, and a contest of athletes and of horse 249 races and of gladiators. And at first the same magistrates put them on, but after this they misappropriated the revenues, making a profit, by divine command the same magistrates of Antioch, together with the landowners, purchased the Olympic games from the Pisans.
