imitating the lives of the saints, which I do not think can now be easily found in the places where we are for the time being and see and hear about certain monks and their monasteries.
(208) For this reason I beseech your love, my holy fathers and servants of God, do not disobey the words of your unworthy father, nor let my sayings appear as nonsense before you. For even if I am weak and full of countless sins, yet see and consider carefully that I have advised you nothing outside of the commandments of God and the divine Scriptures. Make, therefore, a good beginning and give me a little eagerness, so that strengthened by your holy prayers, I might recover and rub my face and wash my eyes and be awakened from the deep sleep of sloth and in return for the good things that you do for me, your lowly servant, I might repay your love, if not worthily, at least according to my ability, with good words which the grace of God gives at the opening of my unclean mouth. Yes, my brothers, I beg you, do not overlook my request, but just as from one half-dead and completely mute you have granted me to speak in the presence of your honor, so grant me also your will, so that by cutting it off you may live the life of the martyrs and prize-winners of Christ, and I, from this day forth, will more and more set my whole soul together with my body for you unto a voluntary death, which I also pray may become for me a provision as I depart for the life there, in Christ Jesus our Lord, to whom be the glory and the power with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Concerning the resurrection of Christ. And of what sort it is or how the resurrection of Christ takes place in us and in it the resurrection of the soul. And what the mystery of this resurrection is. Spoken after Pascha on the
second day of the second week of Pascha. Brothers and fathers, Pascha, the joyful day, of all gladness
and delight, of the resurrection of Christ, which occurs always in the cycle of time, or rather occurs each day and unceasingly in those who know its mystery, has filled our hearts with ineffable joy and exultation, at the same time loosing the labor of the all-venerable fast, or rather, to say, perfecting and at the same time comforting our souls, for which reason, having called all the faithful together for rest and thanksgiving, it has passed, as you see. Let us, therefore, give thanks to the Lord, who brought us across the sea of the fast and led us with gladness into the harbor of His resurrection; let us give thanks to Him, both those who have completed the course of the fast well and eagerly, with a fervent (210) intention and struggles for virtue, and those who have been weak in these things through negligence and weakness of soul, since it is He who gives superabundantly the crowns and the worthy rewards for their works to the diligent, and again grants pardon to the weaker ones, as He is merciful and loves mankind. For He sees the dispositions of our souls and our intentions rather than the labors of the body, through which we exercise ourselves toward virtue, whether intensifying the ascesis more with eagerness of soul or making it less than the diligent through weakness of body, and according to our intentions He measures out in return the prizes and the gifts of the Spirit to each one
