if the judge of all and God should arrive while we are in this state, He who also demands from us an account for an idle word on the day of judgment? And how will we master the other passions, having an unrestrained tongue? For which, tell me, of all the remaining passions is lighter than this passion? The flesh, having natural desire and burning, rises up against the spirit and powerfully wars against the soul, the belly wants to be filled with food, for it was made for this; if therefore we do not master the habit of the tongue, which is easy and light for us, how will we ever be able to become self-controlled over these difficult and great passions, which have much strength with nature and, one might say, with desire and pleasure itself?

(207) Therefore, let there be a beginning for us from today, brothers, and let us run with as much strength as we have, so that like some golden-winged eagles, light, we may attain the Pascha of the Lord, where our forerunner, Christ our God, entered, having cast behind us all the passions that tyrannize us. And let us establish, if it seems good, we ourselves a law by common counsel in our own midst, that except for Saturday and Sunday, if two are found given over to idleness and standing about in useless conversations, they are to partake of nothing else at all on that day, except only dry bread with salt and cold water at the time of the midday meal, standing, of course, and eating at the lower part of the table. And having this as an unbreakable law, you will keep yourselves blameless from idle talk and gossip, and you will serve God for whose sake you place a door on your lips and likewise a guard on your mouths, and you will greatly comfort me your unworthy father in this, and you will fill my humble soul with gladness, and you will benefit your own souls not a little, teaching yourselves a good example and a wonderful habit for the love of God. Then you will be glorified and admired by all people with good reason, and God through you, because in this generation you will be found imitating the lives of the saints, which I do not think can now be easily found in the places where we currently are and see and hear about certain monks and their monasteries.

(208) For this reason I beseech your love, my holy fathers and servants of God, do not disregard the words of me, your unworthy father, nor let my sayings appear as nonsense before you. For even if I am weak and full of myriad sins, yet see and consider carefully that I have advised you nothing outside the commandments of God and the divine Scriptures. Therefore, make a good beginning and give me a little zeal, so that, strengthened by your holy prayers, I may look up and rub my face and wash my eyes and be roused from the deep sleep of sloth, and in return for the good things you do for me, your lowly servant, even if not worthily, yet at least according to my ability, I may repay your love with good words from what the grace of God gives in the opening of my unclean mouth. Yes, my brothers, I beg you, do not overlook my petition, but just as from one half-dead and completely mute you have granted me to speak before your honor, so also grant me your will, so that by the cutting off of it you may live the life of the martyrs and prize-winners of Christ, and I from this day forward will more and more resolve to lay down my whole soul with my body for you to a voluntary death, which I also pray may become provision for me as I depart for the life beyond in Christ Jesus our Lord, to whom be the glory and the power with the Father and the Holy Spirit now and ever and unto the ages of ages. οὕτως ἐχόντων ἡμῶν ὁ κριτής ἁπάντων καί Θεός παραγένηται, ὁ καί ὑπέρ ἀργοῦ λόγου λόγον ἀπαιτῶν ἡμᾶς ἐν ἡμέρᾳ τῆς κρίσεως; Πῶς δέ καί τῶν ἄλλων παθῶν κρατήσομεν, γλῶσσαν ἀκράτητον ἔχοντες; Ποῖον γάρ, εἰπέ μοι, ἐλαφρότερον ἐστι τούτου τοῦ πάθους τῶν λοιπῶν ἁπάντων παθῶν; Ἡ σάρξ, ἔχουσα τήν φυσικήν ἐπιθυμίαν καί πύρωσιν, κατά τοῦ πνεύματος ἐπανίσταται καί πολεμεῖ κραταιῶς τήν ψυχήν, ἡ γαστήρ θέλει βρωμάτων χορτάζεσθαι, εἰς τοῦτο γάρ καί ἐγένετο· εἰ τοίνυν τῆς γλώσσης τήν συνήθειαν, ὅπερ ἐστίν εὔκολον καί κοῦφον ἡμῖν, οὐ κρατήσομεν, τῶν χαλεπῶν τούτων καί μεγάλων, τῶν πολλήν ἐχόντων ἰσχύν μετά τῆς φύσεως καί αὐτῆς, εἰπεῖν, τῆς ἐπιθυμίας καί ἡδονῆς, πῶς ἰσχύσομεν ἐγκρατεῖς γενέσθαι ποτέ;

(207) Ἀρχή οὖν ἔστω ἀπό σήμερον λοιπόν ἡμῖν, ἀδελφοί, καί ὅσον δυνάμεως ἔχομεν, δράμωμεν, ἵνα ὥσπερ τινές χρυσόπτεροι ἀετοί, κοῦφοι τό Πάσχα Κυρίου καταλάβωμεν, ἔνθα πρόδρομος ἡμῶν εἰσῆλθεν Χριστός ὁ Θεός ἡμῶν, πάντα τά τυραννοῦντα ἡμᾶς πάθη ὄπισθεν ἡμῶν ἀπορρίψαντες. Θήσομεν δέ, εἰ δοκεῖ, αὐτοί ἡμεῖς νόμον κοινῇ βουλῇ ἐν μέςῳ ἡμῶν αὐτῶν, ὡσάν ἐκτός σαββάτου καί κυριακῆς εἰ δύο εὑρεθῶσιν ἀργίᾳ ἔκδοτοι καί ἱστάμενοι συντυχίας ἀνωφελεῖς, ὅλως ἔχουσι μηδενός κατά τήν ἡμέραν ἐκείνην ἑτέρου, εἰ μή μόνον ἄρτου ξηροῦ μετά ἅλατος καί ὕδατος μεταλαμβάνειν ψυχροῦ ἐν τῷ καιρῷ τοῦ ἀρίστου, ἱσταμένους δηλονότι καί ἐσθίοντας περί τό κάτω μέρος τῆς τραπέζης. Καί τοῦτο νόμον ἔχοντες ἀπαράβατον, ἀπό μέν ἀργολογίας καί ἐρεσχελίας ἑαυτούς ἀμέμπτους τηρήσητε, τόν Θεόν δέ δι᾿ ὅν θύραν τίθεσθε τοῖς χείλεσιν ὑμῶν καί φυλακήν ὡσαύτως τοῖς στόμασι θεραπεύσετε, καί ἐμέ τόν ἀνάξιον πατέρα ὑμῶν μεγάλως ἐν τούτῳ παρακαλέσετε, καί θυμηδίας πληρώσετε τήν ταπεινήν μου ψυχήν, καί τάς ψυχάς ὑμῶν οὐ μικρῶς ὠφελήσητε, τύπον ἀγαθόν καί συνήθειαν θαυμαστήν ἑαυτούς διά τήν τοῦ Θεοῦ ἀγάπην διδάσκοντες. Ἔπειτα δοξασθήσεσθε καί θαυμασθήσεσθε παρά πάντων εἰκότως ἀνθρώπων καί δι᾿ ὑμῶν ὁ Θεός, ὅτι εἰς τήν γενεάν ταύτην ὑμεῖς εὑρεθήσεσθε τῶν ἁγίων τούς βίους μιμούμενοι, ὅπερ οὐκ οἶμαι νῦν εὐκόλως εὑρεθῆναι ἐν οἷς τόποις τέως ἐσμέν καί βλέπομεν καί περί τινων ἀκούομεν μοναχῶν καί τῶν μοναστηρίων αὐτῶν.

(208) ∆ιά τοῦτο παρακαλῶ τήν ὑμετέραν ἀγάπην, πατέρες μου ἅγιοι καί δοῦλοι Θεοῦ, μή παρακούσητε τούς ἐμούς λόγους τοῦ ἀναξίου πατρός ὑμῶν, μηδέ ὡς λῆρος ἐνώπιον ὑμῶν φανῶσι τά ῥήματά μου. Εἰ γάρ καί ἀσθενής εἰμι καί μυρίων γέμων ἁμαρτημάτων, ἀλλ᾿ ἴδετε καί σκοπήσατε ἀκριβῶς ὅτι οὐδέν ὑμῖν ἔξωθεν τῶν τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐντολῶν καί τῶν θείων Γραφῶν συνεβούλευσα. Ποιήσατε οὖν ἀρχήν καλήν καί δότε μοι προθυμίαν μικράν, ἵνα εὐχαῖς ὑμῶν ἁγίαις ἐνισχύσας, ἀνανεύσω καί τρίψω μου τήν ὄψιν καί τούς ὀφθαλμούς νίψωμαι καί τοῦ πολλοῦ ὕπνου τῆς ῥᾳθυμίας ἐξεγερθήσωμαι καί ἀντί τῶν ἀγαθῶν ὧν εἰς ἐμέ ποιεῖτε τόν εὐτελῆ δοῦλον ὑμῶν, εἰ καί μή ἀξίως, ἀλλά γε τό κατά δύναμιν, λόγοις ἀνταμείψωμαι ἀγαθοῖς, ἐξ ὧν ἡ τοῦ Θεοῦ χάρις δίδωσιν ἐν ἀνοίξει τοῦ ἀκαθάρτου μου στόματος, τήν ἀγάπην ὑμῶν. Ναί, ἀδελφοί μου, δέομαι ὑμῶν, μή παρίδητέ μου τήν δέησιν, ἀλλ᾿ ὥσπερ ἐξ ἡμιθανοῦς καί παντελῶς ἀλάλου ἐδώκατέ μοι λέγειν ἐνώπιον τῆς ὑμῶν τιμιότητος, οὕτω μοι χαρίσασθε καί τό θέλημα ὑμῶν, ὡς ἄν διά τῆς αὐτοῦ ἐκκοπῆς ὑμεῖς μέν ζήσεσθε ζωήν τῶν μαρτύρων καί ἀθλοφόρων Χριστοῦ, ἐγώ δέ ἀπό τῆς σύμερον ἔτι καί ἔτι προσθήσω τιθέναι ὑπέρ ὑμῶν ὅλην μου τήν ψυχήν σύν τῷ σώματι εἰς ἑκούσιον θάνατον, ὅ καί εὔχομαι ἐφόδιόν μοι γενέσθαι πρός τήν ἐκεῖθεν ζωήν ἀπαίροντι ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ τῷ Κυρίῳ ἡμῶν, ᾧ ἡ δόξα καί τό κράτος σύν τῷ Πατρί καί τῷ Ἁγίῳ Πνεύματι νῦν καί ἀεί καί εἰς τούς αἰῶνας τῶν αἰώνων.
