to introduce an addition to the Trisagion; so that the indignant crowds went out on the day of the litany which was held in the Triconch because of the dust; at which time Timothy also, by a written memorandum, ordered all the churches of the city to say the Trisagion in the litanies with the addition. Which many did, out of fear. But the monks came singing another psalm. And seeing them the people cried out: "Well come are the orthodox." And a great sedition arose and the burning of many houses and countless murders, with the mob crying out against Anastasius, and demanding another emperor, while all acclaimed Vitalian as emperor; so that Anastasius fled and hid in a suburb near Blachernae, and was insulted by Ariadne herself as the cause of many evils for the Christians. And to Alamundar, the phylarch of the Saracens, who had been baptized, the impious Severus sent two bishops to impart his own pestilence to him. But by the providence of God the man was baptized by the orthodox who accept the synod. And when the bishops of Severus were hastening to pervert the phylarch from the true doctrine, Alamundar wonderfully refuted them with such a stratagem. For he said to them: "I received letters," he says, "today, informing me that Michael the archangel has died." And when they said this was impossible, the phylarch said: "And how was a bare God crucified according to you, if Christ was not of two natures, if not even an angel dies? And so the bishops of Severus departed 160 with shame. And Koades mutilated some of the Christians in Persia, who afterwards walked about. Year of the world 6006. Year of the divine incarnation 506. Emperor of the Romans, Anastasius, for 27 years. In the 23rd year. Emperor of the Persians, Kavadh, for 30 years. In the 19th year. Bishop of Rome, Hormisdas, for 10 years. In the 1st year. Bishop of Constantinople, Timothy, for 6 years. In the 2nd year. Bishop of Jerusalem, Elias, for 23 years. In the 3rd year. Bishop of Alexandria, John, for 11 years. In the 8th year. Bishop of Antioch, Severus, for 7 years. In the 2nd year. In this year Vitalian, having taken all of Thrace and Scythia and Moesia, having with him a multitude of Huns and Bulgars, took Anchialus and Odessopolis, also capturing Cyril, the magister militum of Thrace, and came raiding as far as Byzantium. But sparing the city he encamped at Sosthenion. And Anastasius, in despair, sends some of the senate to ask him to make peace and to swear with the senate, that the exiled bishops be recalled ..... in Heraclea of Thrace. But Vitalian added that the commanders of each schola should also swear this, and that Macedonius and Flavian, who had been unjustly expelled, should receive back their own thrones, and likewise all the other bishops, and so the synod should be convened, with the bishop of Rome and all the bishops coming, and by a common judgment the things dared against the orthodox should be examined. And when the emperor and the senate and the rest of the rulers and peoples had sworn and confirmed that these things should be so, peace was made; and he returned to his own lands. And Secundinus the patrician, brother-in-law of Anastasius, and father of Hypatius, falling at the feet of Vitalian with many tears, received back his own son Hypatius alive from his bonds in Moesia. And Hormisdas, the bishop of Rome, being pressured by Theuderic who was gratifying 161 Vitalian, sent Ennodius the bishop and Vitalian the archdeacon for the convening of the synod in Heraclea. And about two hundred bishops came from various places; who, having been mocked by the lawless emperor and Timothy, bishop of Constantinople, departed having accomplished nothing. For the impious emperor, having broken the agreements, secretly indicated to the pope of Rome not to attend. For he had sent a sacra to Vitalian to send it to Rome for the pope to attend the convening of the synod in Heraclea. And all the people and the senate openly reviled Anastasius as
