in 92.8 immortality, or rather, being wholly immortality. For he himself said, "I am the life". * Nor is our hope through the flesh. "Cursed, it says, is he who hopes in man. And he will be like the wild tamarisk." 93.1 What then shall we say? Is Christ not a man? From what has been said before, it is clear to anyone that we undoubtedly confess the Lord God the Word to have become man, not in appearance, but in truth. 93.2 but not a man who came by an advance of divinity. For our hope of salvation is not in man; for none of all the men from Adam was able to work salvation, but God the Word having become man, so that our hope may not be in man, but in 93.3 a living and true God, who became man. "For every high priest taken from among men is appointed on behalf of men" according to what is written. Whence the Lord, having come, took the flesh from our flesh, and God the Word became a man like us, so that in his divinity he might give us salvation and in his humanity he might suffer for us men, destroying suffering through suffering and 93.4 putting death to death by his own death. But the suffering was reckoned to the divinity, even though the divinity is impassible, the suffering being reckoned to the divinity, because the holy and 93.5 impassible God the Word was thus pleased to come. The example is something like this: as if someone were wearing a garment, and on the garment sprinkled blood defiles the garment, but the * body of the one wearing it was not reached, yet 93.6 the stain from the blood is reckoned to the one wearing the garment, so Christ suffered in the flesh, I mean in the Lord's man, whom the holy God the Word himself fashioned for himself, having come from heaven; as the holy Peter says, "put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit," and again, "Since therefore Christ suffered for us in the flesh, 93.7 you also arm yourselves with the same mind." Just as the blood on the garment is reckoned to the one wearing it, the suffering of the flesh was reckoned to him as to the divinity, though it suffered nothing, so that the world might not have its 93.8 hope in a man, but in the Lord's man, the divinity undertaking that the suffering be reckoned to it, so that the salvation from the impassible divinity might be on behalf of the world, so that the suffering which occurred in the flesh might be reckoned to the divinity, even though it suffered nothing, so that the scripture which says, "for if they had known, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory," and the rest, might be fulfilled. 94.1 Therefore, the Lord was crucified, was crucified, and we worship the crucified one, the one buried and risen on the third day and ascended into heaven. "O the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge 94.2 of God," according to what is written; "for we know in part and we prophesy in part," as if drawing a drop from the sea of the knowledge of God and comprehending an example of such an economy, the grace of our hope by the good pleasure of the Father, the will of the Son, with the will of the Holy Spirit, * of the same economy of God. 94.3 But all the scriptures contained the proclamation of the resurrection sporadically, but the perfection was reserved for the presence of the hypostatic Word himself. 94.4 "For Christ is the fulfillment of the law," according to what is written. For where did the divine scripture not speak about the resurrection? First the blood of Abel proclaims it; for after he died "he still speaks," as the scripture says. "Enoch was translated and was not found and did not see death; for he pleased God." Noah constructed an ark by God's command, working for himself 94.5 a new birth for his own house. Abraham, when old, receives
