to teach. We are very much convinced that it will turn back upon their own head, but for the time being it will be sufficient for them to be barred from synods and common assembly. For indeed I should not be led to say at present how many things they will suffer a little later, if they do not refrain from this 4.14.6 madness. But they (for what do they not add to the evil?), gathering the most wicked men as if by command, these very leaders of heresies, they enroll in the clergy, thus adulterating a venerable appearance, as if it were permitted for them to plunder everything. And yet who, being among the living, could endure these men, who fill the cities with impiety, and hide their exile with defilements, loving this one deed alone, to continually hate good men. Away with you, O company of knaves! 4.14.7 Why have they established themselves on the most divine thrones? Now is the time for the nurslings of the truth to come into the light and into the midst, all who, straying from their customs, were long held by fear. For their clever devices have been exposed; and there will be no new kind of contrivance which will rescue them from their impiety. It is the work of good men to live with the faith of the fathers and to increase it day by day, but not to meddle further. And I would advise even those who have at long last changed their minds from the pit to cast their vote with this decree, which the bishops, wise in divine things, with the help of the Almighty, duly decreed.’” From that time, therefore, in this manner the heresy called that of the Anomoeans came very near to prevailing. 4.15.1 But not long after, the emperor, having returned from Rome to Sirmium, at the request of an embassy of the bishops from the West, summoned Liberius from Beroea, and with the envoys from the East also present, having gathered the priests who chanced to be in the camp, he compelled him to confess that the Son is not of one substance with the Father. Basil and Eustathius and 4.15.2 Eleusius also pressed on, and enjoying very great freedom of speech with him, moved the emperor to this. These men then, having gathered into one document the decrees against Paul of Samosata and Photinus of Sirmium and the creed set forth at the dedication of the church of the Antiochenes, on the grounds that some were attempting to establish their own heresy under the pretext of the *homoousios*, prepared Liberius to consent to this, as well as Athanasius and Alexander and Severianus and Criscens, who were priests in Africa. Likewise also Ursacius and Germanius of Sirmium and Valens the bishop of Mursa and as many as were present from the East 4.15.3 consented. And in part they also received a confession from Liberius denouncing those who do not declare the Son to be like the Father in substance and in all things. For when Eudoxius and those with him in Antioch who were zealous for the heresy of Aetius received the letter of Hosius, they spread a report that Liberius also had rejected the *homoousios* and holds the opinion that the Son is unlike the Father. 4.15.4 When these things had thus been accomplished by the envoys from the West, the emperor granted Liberius his return to Rome; and the bishops in Sirmium wrote to Felix, who was then leader of the Roman church, and to the clergy there, to receive him, and that both should administer the apostolic throne and officiate in common with one accord, and to consign to amnesty the painful events that had occurred on account of the ordination of Felix and the exile of Liberius. 4.15.5 For the people of Rome loved Liberius, as he was noble and good in other respects and had bravely spoken against the emperor on behalf of the dogma, so that a very great sedition was stirred up and it proceeded even to murders. And when Felix had survived for a short time, Liberius alone presided over the church, 4.15.6 God having so ordained it in some way, that the throne of Peter might not be dishonored by being directed by two leaders, which is a symbol of discord and foreign to ecclesiastical ordinance. 4.16.1 So then, these things had happened in Sirmium, and it seemed at that time that, because of the fear of the emperor, East and West were of one mind concerning the dogma.
