to these things, which seemed to be from them, saying and putting forward that unformulated Typos, adding it to everything they said, above and below; since they now knew that the holy man was not in the least swayed by their arguments, he who had cried out this great thing before all others, that "All the power of the heavens will not persuade me to do what you propose; for what defense, he says, shall I make, I say not to God, but to my own conscience, if for the sake of the glory of men, which has no substance, I now renounce the faith that saves me?"
ΛΓ´. When therefore they knew that he was so disposed, and especially that he was blaming Theodosius for putting forth his words and oaths so vainly and to his own harm, then these men, rising up in haste, did their work, and such things as such men would do. For some were abusing him with their fists—O, unholy hands!—inciting also the attendant servants to the audacious act; others were striking him with their palms; others were assailing him with slaps and shoves; and others were even spitting in his face, just as the soldiers and the lawless crowd did to my Jesus; whom they, who were truly despicable, did not cease from drenching with their spittle, before they filled his entire face with spittle, and (15Γ_326> inundated it like rags; so that from the multitude of saliva flowing down, a stench arose that was by no means tolerable; of which no one else, but only those fetid and accursed ones, were worthy to smell; and they would not have stopped so 0104 acting, those most shameless men, if Theodosius of Caesarea had not, restraining their attacks, made them turn to other things. And they, as if they had done nothing, who—how should I say it?—were even more impudent than dogs, after a short while, again brought questions and inquiries and some other nonsense to the saint; but when they saw that their efforts were fruitless and ineffective, laboring only in vain and to no purpose, having poured out upon him insults not even to be spoken of in words, and having taken away whatever useful and necessary things he happened to have, those perverse men departed from there.
Λ∆´. And after the passage of some time, they bring him into Constantinople, bringing with him also the disciple Anastasius; and in addition, also the other Anastasius, whom we also called the apocrisiarius. And having used curses against them, these unspeakable and accursed men, and having subjected them to anathema (not only them, but all the orthodox, both the living and the departed), they then hand them over to those appointed for punishment, so that they might carry out the sentences pronounced against them; pretending not to take away their lives entirely, so that there might be something philanthropic even for the misanthropes, but inflicting punishments on them more bitter than death itself. For the prefect of the city, having taken them and brought them into the praetorium, first had the divine Maximus stretched out on four posts and ordered him to be beaten with hardened ox-sinews; the polluted one having no pity for his old age, nor for the withered members of his flesh, nor for that body consumed by fasting and labors; but he flayed him so cruelly, that with the amount of blood flowing down, the entire ground beneath was stained red, and all his flesh was spent, and not even a small part of his limbs was left healthy.
(15Γ_328> ΛΕ´. Then the beastly man moves on also to his disciple; and next also to his namesake, inflicting many blows on them as well, and making them full of welts; setting heralds over them, who shouted these things as they were being scourged: "Those who disobey the imperial edicts and remain unyielding are worthy to suffer thus." And these, barely breathing, they carried and cast into the prison.

Οἱ μέν γάρ αὐτόν πυγμαῖς, ὦ χειρῶν ἀνοσίων! ᾔκιζον, παραθήγοντες καί τούς συνεπομένους πρός τήν τόλμαν ὑπηρέτας· οἱ δ' ἐκολάφιζον· ἄλλοι ῥαπίσμασι καί ὠθισμοῖς ἔβαλλον· οἱ δέ, καί εἰς τό τούτου ἐνέπτυον πρόσωπον, καθά καί τόν ἐμόν Ἰησοῦν οἱ στρατιῶται καί δῆμος ὁ ἄνομος· ὅν οὐ πρίν ἀνῆκαν τοῖς πτύσμασιν οἱ ἀληθῶς κατάπτυστοι ἐπιπάττοντες, πρίν τό πρόσωπον ἅπαν τῶν πτυέλων ἐμπλῆσαι, καί ῥάκια (15Γ_326> αὐτά κατακλῦσαι· ὡς καί τῷ πλήθει τῶν καταφερομένων σιέλων, δυσωδίαν οὐχ ὅπως καί φορητήν ἐγγίνεσθαι· ἧς ἄλλος μέν οὐδείς, μόνοι δ' οἱ δυσώδεις ἐκεῖνοι καί ἐξάγιστοι, ὀσφραίνεσθαι ἄξιοι· καί οὐκ ἄν ἐπαύσαντο οὕτω 0104 δρῶντες οἱ ἀναιδέστατοι, εἰ μή ὁ Καισαρείας Θεοδόσιος, τάς τούτων ἐπισχών ὁρμάς, πρός ἄλλα τετράφθαι ἀποίησεν. σύν αὐτῷ καί τόν μαθητήν Ἀναστάσιον εἰσάγοντες· πρός δέ, καί τόν ἕτερον Ἀναστάσιον, ὅν καί ἀποκρισιάριον ἔφαμεν. Καί ἀραῖς κατ' αὐτῶν χρησάμενοι, οἱ ἐπίῤῥητοι οὗτοι καί ἐπάρατοι, καί ἀναθέματι ὑποβαλόντες (οὐκ αὐτούς μόνον, ἀλλά ἅπαντας ὀρθοδόξους, τούς τε περιόντας, καί τούς ἀπελθόντας) παραδιδόασι τότε τοῖς ἐπί τό κολάζειν τεταγμένοις, ὡς ἄν τά ἐξενηνεγμένα κατ' αὐτῶν διαπράξοιντο· τό μέν ζῇν δῆθεν τούτοις οὐ παντάπασιν ἀφαιρούμενοι, ἵν' ᾗ τι καί τοῖς ἀφιλανθρώποις φιλάνθρωπον, πικρότερον δ' αὐτοῦ θανάτου τάς τιμωρίας προσεξεργάζοντες. Ὁ γάρ τῆς πόλεως αὐτούς παραλαβών ἔπαρχος, καί ἐν τῷ πραιτωρίῳ εἰσαγαγών, πρῶτα μέν τόν θεῖον Μάξιμον ἐκ τεσσάρων τείνας, νεύροις ἀπεσκληκόσιν ἐκέλευε τύπτεσθαι· μή γῆρας αὐτοῦ κατοικτίσας ὁ μιαρός, μή τά κατεῤῥικνωμένα τῶν σαρκῶν μέλη, μή σῶμα ἐκεῖνο τό νηστείᾳ καί πόνοις δαπανηθέν· ἀλλ' οὕτως ὠμῶς ἔξαινεν, ὡς καί τῷ πλήθει τοῦ καταῤῥέοντος αἵματος, τό ὑποκείμενον ἔδαφος ἅπαν φοινίξαι, καί σάρκας πάσας δαπανῆσαι, καί μηδέ βραχύ τῶν μελῶν ὑγιές ἐναπολιπεῖν.
(15Γ_328> ΛΕ´. Εἶτα ὁ θηριώδης, καί πρός τόν αὐτοῦ μέτεισι μαθητήν· ἑξῆς δέ καί πρός τόν
ἐκείνου συνώνυμον, πολλάς καί αὐτοῖς ἐπιθείς τάς πληγάς, καί μωλώπων ὑποπλέους ἀπεργασάμενος· ἐπιστήσας τούτοις καί κήρυκας, ταῦτα μαστιζομένοις ἐπιβοῶντας· "Οἱ τοῖς βασιλικοῖς ἀπειθοῦντες θεσπίσμασι, καί ἀνένδοτοι μένοντες, οὕτω παθεῖν ἄξιοι." Οὕς δή καί μικρά πνέοντας, φέροντες τῇ εἱρκτῇ ἐναπέῤῥιψαν.
