(128) I enjoy the joy ineffable and divine, I luxuriate in her beauty, often I embrace her, I kiss and I adore, I have great gratitude to those who procured for me to see her whom I longed for, and to partake of the unutterable light and become light and to share in His gift from henceforth and to possess the giver of all good things and to become unfailing in spiritual gifts. Who, having drawn me, has led me to these good things, who has brought me up from the depth of worldly deceit? Who separated me from father and brothers and friends, and relatives and pleasures and the joy of the world? Who showed me the way of repentance and mourning, from where I have found the day that has no end? He was an angel, not a man; yet a man he is, by whom the world is mocked and the dragon is trodden upon, and the demons tremble at his presence. How can I tell you, brother, the wonders and prodigies I saw in Egypt done by him? For now I shall tell you this one thing, for I cannot tell all. For he came down and found me a slave and a sojourner and said: Come, my child, I will lead you to God! But I said to him out of much disbelief: And what sign will you show me, that you may assure me, that you yourself are able to deliver me from Egypt and snatch me from the hands of the deceitful Pharaoh, lest by following you I should be in greater danger? Light a great fire, he said, and that I may enter its midst, and if I do not remain unburnt, do not follow me! The word astounded me; I did what was commanded. (129) and the flame blazed up, and he stood in the midst, unharmed and uninjured and was calling to me. I am afraid, I said, Master, for I am a sinner! He came out, came to me and embraced me: Why were you afraid, he said to me, why do you cower and tremble? Great and awesome is the wonder, you will see greater things than this. I was astounded, I said, Lord, I do not dare to approach you nor do I wish to appear bolder than the fire; for I see you are a man beyond man and I do not dare to look at you, whom the fire revered. He brought me nearer, he embraced me and again he kissed me with a holy kiss
