and to show him light." And again: "Thus says the Lord: Behold, I lay in the foundations of Zion a precious stone, a cornerstone, honorable, for its foundations, and he who believes in him shall not be put to shame." And again: "In that day there shall be the root of Jesse, and he who rises up to rule the nations, in him will the nations hope." And again: "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me." Having read this in the synagogue on the Sabbath, the Lord said: "Truly I say to you, today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing." Paragraph 5.168 And this most eloquent Isaiah, both through words and through visions, foretold to men both the confession of the Holy Trinity, that is, of the one God, and the resurrection of human nature, which things the Church of God now also professes. Glory to him who always wisely orders the human race. 5.169 This Jeremiah, also being deemed worthy to foretell concerning the mystery according to Christ, saying thus: "And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of the one on whom a price had been set, whom they of the sons of Israel priced, and they gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord commanded me." And the evangelist Matthew also mentions this prophecy, which was fulfilled at the time of the passion. Again the same prophet says: "Behold, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt. For they did not continue in my covenant, and I disregarded them, says the Lord. For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the Lord: I will put my laws into their minds, and I will write them on their hearts, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. And they shall not teach, each one his brother and each one his neighbor, saying, 'Know the Lord,' for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest. For I will be merciful toward their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more. "And the Apostle mentions this in the Epistle to the Hebrews.Paragraph 5.170 And this one likewise foretells the things concerning the Lord Christ, who is the author of the second state; for he foretells more clearly both a first and a second state, which second one had its beginning in the Lord Christ. Glory to God for ever. Amen. EZEKIEL 5.171 This Ezekiel, prophesying in Babylon, was also deemed worthy to foretell concerning the dispensation according to Christ, and he says: "And I will deliver them from all their lawlessness and will cleanse them; and they will be my people, and I will be their God; and my servant David shall be ruler in their midst, and there will be one shepherd for all, for they will walk in my commandments." And again he says: "And he said to me: This water that flows out toward the eastern Galilee, and went down into the Arabah and came to the sea, to the water of the outlet, and will heal the waters, and it shall be that every living creature which swarms, and to everything where the river comes, will live." Paragraph 5.172 And this one hints at things similar to the others, foretelling the author and the way of life of our second state. Glory to God who wisely orders all things. Amen. DANIEL 5.173 This Daniel, prophesying in Babylon, was also deemed worthy to foretell concerning the Lord Christ, and he says thus: "And you shall know and understand: From the going out of the word to answer you and to build Jerusalem until Christ the ruler, there shall be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks," and the rest. And again: "And a stone was cut out without hands and it struck the image, and the stone became like a great mountain and filled the earth." And again: "And behold, with the clouds of heaven one like the Son of man was coming, and he came to the Ancient of Days; and to him was given the honor and the authority," and the rest that was said.
