later he commanded to serve and carry wood for the people. Against these the Amorites marched as if they were deserters, five kings of the Jebusites, of whom the first was Adonibezek king of Jerusalem with his armies. against whom Joshua went up with Israel and delivered the Gibeonites, but cut down the fleeing Amorites with their 170 kings. who also, having been caught hiding in a cave, were shut up there until the war ceased. where many were cut down by Israel, but more died from hailstones cast down upon them from heaven. then Joshua, praying with divine power, made the sun stand still over Gibeon and the moon over the valley of Aijalon, until he had defeated the enemies. and bringing the εʹ kings out of the cave, he commanded the leaders of the war of the sons of Israel to tread upon their necks, and he killed them and took their cities, which were five, Makkedah and Libnah, Lachish, and the king of Gezer, Horam, who was helping those in Lachish, and Adullam and Hebron. then he also took Debir and its king and its villages and all the hill country. And Jabin the king of Hazor, having gathered the kings around him and great Sidon, and the Canaanites from the north and from the plain and from the coastal regions of the east, and the Horites and the Amorites and the Hivites and the Jebusites and the Perizzites and the Hittites under the desert, being many as the sand of the sea and mighty in chariots and horses, came to fight against Joshua; whom he took and destroyed them all, plundering them and their cities. all the kings whom the Lord delivered to Joshua were κθʹ, whose names are written in a book. And Joshua was old, advanced in years, and the Lord commanded him, and he allotted all the land to the θʹ #171 tribes, he and Eleazar the high priest, before the Lord in Shiloh. and to Joshua was given Timnath in the mountain of Ephraim, and to Caleb son of Jephunneh, on his asking, was given Hebron, who also wiped out the three sons of Anak, who are called giants. and to Othniel his kinsman, son of Kenaz the younger, who took the city of letters, Kiriath-sepher in Debir, Caleb gave Achsah his own daughter as a prize to be his wife. 171 And the two and a half tribes of Reuben and of Gad and the half tribe of Manasseh returned to their own possessions, which Moses had given them, where they went and raised an altar; against whom those from the θʹ #171 tribes, wishing to make war as against those sinning against God because they were making an offering outside the ark, ceased after the two and a half tribes defended themselves with reverence, and they named the altar among them a witness. and μηʹ cities were also given to the Levites. then Joshua, having gathered all Israel with the rulers, sent them away after giving much exhortation concerning piety. And he himself died, having lived ριʹ years, and they buried him in Timnath-serah in the mountain of Ephraim within his borders, burying with him also the stone knives.
