in spirit. Wherefore the soil of Egypt is unworthy to receive the bare footprint of the saints passing through. Whence also those eating the Passover secure their feet with sandals. But when one has reached the holy place, let him take off his sandals. Wherefore it was also said to the apostles, not to take sandals. And it shall be, he says, to Israel as the day when he came out of the land of Egypt. For then, they say, they passed through the Red Sea and the river Jordan with their sandals on. But some say that they will likewise rejoice, crossing the river on foot, and making their way everywhere in Egypt unhindered, and singing a song, which the prophet sets forth as being similar to, "Let us sing to the Lord, for he has been gloriously glorified." CHAPTER 12. 8. 9And he will say in that day: I will praise you, Lord, because you were angry with me, and you turned away your wrath, and had mercy on me. Behold my God, my Savior. I will trust in him, I will be saved in him, and I will not be afraid; for my glory and my praise is the Lord, and he became for me salvation9, etc. For preaching the Gospel to the Jews in synagogues, and from the conversion of the Gentiles making Churches, they taught those who were helped by them to sing a new song. For with the river that was formerly among them and the surging sea having been done away with, they say: Behold my God, my Savior 2061; I will trust in him. And I will not be afraid, for those who hindered piety have been destroyed. And instead of the demons of old, my glory and my praise is the Lord. But "You were angry with me," he says, confessing that he suffered justly, having turned away from God. And he represents the forgiveness of sins given through Christ, saying: You turned away your wrath, and had mercy on me. For often one is left behind, having once been carried away by Egyptian things, to enjoy for a time his own folly, that he may reap what he badly sowed. But having received mercy through a calling back, he sings the present song. And this is similar to: "I will bear the wrath of the Lord, because I have sinned against him." And, "For he will not be angry forever, nor will he be wrathful for eternity." And perceiving the benefaction, and saying that "You were angry with me, and had mercy on me," he says: Behold my God, my Savior. Neither those who give alms before men, nor those who seek glory from one another, can say that "my glory and my praise is the Lord." But those who seek the glory that is from the only God, and do not transgress the commandment of "let us not become vainglorious." And since God promises, "those who glorify me I will glorify," it is clear that one who glorifies God well is glorified by him. For the face of Moses was also glorified, since he knew well how to glorify God. But no one who has erroneous opinions about God has an acceptable praise. For it is the mark of one to both praise and glorify well. And we possess each of these, having been shown mercy by God. For the grace given to us is not according to the works that we have done, but according to his great mercy. And in another way, the things in Egypt are similar to those at the time of the advent; for freedom from slavery has come, then from a sensible, but now from a spiritual Pharaoh. Then the water was changed into blood, but now it has become saving through holy baptism. Those pursuing Israel were drowned in the Red Sea; but through the holy disciples they were taught to swim through the waves of this present life and the surge within it. Then there was terrible hail; now the divine rain has descended into their mind, making them fruitful. Then there was deep darkness; but now light in Christ. The Egyptians mourned their firstborn; but now the firstborn from the dead has saved them, as once he saved the firstborn of Israel. How then was it not fitting for them, rejoicing in these things, to praise the giver of them? But God, being ready to give in return, repays those who genuinely glorify him with spiritual gifts, saying, And you will draw water with joy from the springs of salvation. And one will understand this hearing the Savior say, "If anyone 2064 thirsts, let him come to me and drink. He who believes in me, as the Scripture has said, rivers from his belly

Φθάσας δέ τις ἐπὶ τὸν ἅγιον τόπον, ὑπολυέσθω. ∆ιὸ καὶ τοῖς ἀποστόλοις ἐλέγετο, μὴ ὑποδήματα αἴρειν. Καὶ ἔσται, φησὶ, τῷ Ἰσραὴλ, ὡς ἡ ἡμέρα ὅτε ἐξῆλθεν ἐκ γῆς Αἰγύπτου. Τότε γὰρ, φασὶ, παρῆλθον τὴν Ἐρυθρὰν θάλασσαν, καὶ τὸν Ἰορδάνην ποταμὸν ὑποδεδεμένοι. Καὶ οὐ φοβηθήσομαι, τῶν εὐσεβεῖν κωλυόντων ἀνηρημένων. Ἀντὶ δὲ τῶν πάλαι δαιμόνων, δόξα μου καὶ ἡ αἴνεσίς μου ὁ Κύριος. Ὠργίσθης δέ μοι, φησὶν, ἐξομολογούμενος, ὡς δίκαια παθὼν ἀποστραφεὶς τὸν Θεόν. Τὴν δὲ δοθεῖσαν τῶν ἁμαρτημάτων ἄφεσιν διὰ Χριστοῦ παρίστησι, λέγων· Ἀπέστρεψας τὸν θυμόν σου, καὶ ἠλέησάς με. Πολλάκις γὰρ ἀφίεταί τις καταλειπόμενος ἅπαξ τοῖς Αἰγυπτιακοῖς συναπαχθεὶς χρόνον ἀπολαῦσαί τινα τῆς ἰδίας ἀβουλίας, ἵνα θερίσῃ ἃ κακῶς ἔσπειρεν. Ἐλεηθεὶς δὲ δι' ἀνακλήσεως, ᾄδει τὴν παροῦσαν ᾠδήν. Ὅμοιον δὲ τοῦτο τῷ· "Ὀργὴν Κυρίου ὑποίσω, ὅτι ἥμαρτον αὐτῷ." Καὶ τὸ, "Οὐ γὰρ εἰς τέλος ὀργισθήσεται, οὐδὲ εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα μηνιεῖ." Αἰσθανόμενος δὲ τῆς εὐεργεσίας, καὶ λέγων, ὅτι ὠργίσθης μοι, καὶ ἠλέησάς με, φησίν· Ἰδοὺ ὁ Θεός μου, Σωτήρ μου. Οὔτε δὲ οἱ ποιοῦντες τὴν ἐλεημοσύνην ἔμπροσθεν τῶν ἀνθρώπων, οὔτε οἱ δόξαν παρ' ἀλλήλων ζητοῦντες, δύνανται λέγειν, ὅτι ἡ δόξα μου, καὶ ἡ αἴνεσίς μου ὁ Κύριος. Ἀλλ' οἱ τὴν δόξαν τὴν παρὰ τοῦ μόνου Θεοῦ ζητοῦντες, καὶ τὴν τοῦ, μὴ γινώμεθα κενόδοξοι, μὴ παραβαίνοντες ἐντολήν. Ἐπαγγελλομένου δὲ Θεοῦ, ὡς τοὺς δοξάζοντάς με δοξάσω, δῆλον ὡς καλῶς τις δοξάζων Θεὸν, δεδοξασμένος ἐστὶ παρ' αὐτῷ. Καὶ Μωϋσέως γὰρ ἐδοξάσθη τὸ πρόσωπον, ἐπειδὴ καλῶς ᾔδει δοξάζειν Θεόν. Οὐδεὶς δὲ διημαρτημένας ἔχων ὑπολήψεις περὶ Θεοῦ, δεκτὴν ἔχει τὴν αἴνεσιν. Ἑνὸς γὰρ ἄμφω αἰνεῖν τε καὶ δοξάζειν καλῶς. Κεκτήμεθα δὲ τούτων ἑκάτερον ἠλεημένοι ὑπὸ Θεοῦ. Οὐ γὰρ κατὰ τὰ ἔργα ἃ ἐποιήσαμεν ἡμεῖς, ἀλλὰ κατὰ τὸ πολὺ αὐτοῦ ἔλεος ἡ δοθεῖσα χάρις ἡμῖν. Καὶ ἄλλως δὲ, τὰ ἐν Αἰγύπτῳ, τοῖς ἐπὶ τῆς ἐπιδημίας παρόμοια· δουλείας γὰρ ἐλευθερία γεγένηται, τότε μὲν αἰσθητοῦ, νυνὶ δὲ νοητοῦ Φαραώ. Τότε μὲν εἰς αἷμα τὸ ὕδωρ μετεσκευάζετο, νῦν δὲ σωτήριον γέγονεν διὰ τοῦ ἁγίου βαπτίσματος. Οἱ τὸν Ἰσραὴλ διώκοντες ἐπὶ θαλάσσης Ἐρυθρᾶςἀπεπνίγοντο· διὰ δὲ τῶν ἁγίων ἐδιδάσκοντο μαθητῶν τῶν τοῦ παρόντος βίου κυμάτων τε τῶν ἐν αὐτῷ διανήχεσθαι κλύδωνα. Χάλαζα τότε δεινή· νῦν ὁ θεῖος εἰς νοῦν αὐτοῖς καταβέβηκεν ὑετὸς ἐγκάρπους ἀποτελῶν. Σκότος τότε βαθύ· νῦν δὲ φῶς ἐν Χριστῷ. Ἐθρήνησαν Αἰγύπτιοι τὰ πρωτότοκα· νῦν δὲ σέσωκεν αὐτοὺς ὁ πρωτότοκος ἐκ νεκρῶν, ὡς πάλαι τοῦ Ἰσραὴλ τὰ πρωτότοκα. Πῶς οὖν οὐκ ἦν ἐπὶ τούτοις ἀκόλουθον, εὐφραινομένους τὸν δοτῆρα τούτων ὑμνεῖν; Ὁ δὲ Θεὸς ἕτοιμος ὢν εἰς ἀντίδοσιν, τοὺς γνησίως αὐτὸν δοξάζοντας, πνευματικαῖς ἀμείβεται δωρεαῖς, λέγων, Καὶ ἀντλήσετε ὕδωρ μετ' εὐφροσύνης ἐκ τῶν πηγῶν τοῦ σωτηρίου. Νοήσει δέ τις αὐτὸ τοῦ Σωτῆρος ἀκούων εἰπόντος, "Εἴ τις 2064 διψᾷ, ἐρχέσθω πρὸς μὲ, καὶ πινέτω. Ὁ πιστεύων εἰς ἐμὲ, καθὼς εἶπεν ἡ Γραφὴ, ποταμοὶ ἐκ τῆς κοιλίας
