to rebuke them, chastising them with severity; for you will not kill them by disciplining them, but rather you will save them, as Solomon somewhere in Wisdom says: “Discipline your son, and he will give you rest; for thus he will be of good hope to you. For you will strike him with a rod, but you will deliver his soul from death.” And again the same one says thus: “He who spares his rod, hates his own son.” And next: “Break his ribs while he is a child, lest having become hardened he disobey you.” He therefore who spares to advise and discipline his own son, hates his own child. Therefore teach your children the word of the Lord, and correct them with stripes and make them submissive, from infancy teaching them the holy scriptures, both ours and the divine, and delivering to them every divine scripture, giving them no liberty to have dominion over you against your will, not allowing them to associate with their peers at a symposium; for thus they will be turned to disorder and will fall into fornication. And if through the neglect of the parents they suffer this, the ones who begot them will be guilty for their souls; for if through the parents' indifference they associate with the undisciplined, the children who have sinned will not be punished alone, but their parents will also be judged for them. For this reason, be diligent to join them in marriage at the proper time, lest in the prime of life their boiling passions result in fornication, and you will be required to give an account on the day of judgment by the Lord God. And concerning servants, what more can we say, than that the slave should show goodwill to his master with the fear of God, even if he is impious or wicked, yet not, however, unanimity in religion. And the master should love his servant, and even if he is different, he should judge him equally, insofar as he is a human being. And he who has a faithful master, while his mastership is preserved, should love him both as a master and as a fellow believer and as a father, not as a men-pleaser, but as one who loves his master, knowing that God will repay him the reward for his service. Likewise also the master who has a faithful servant, while his service is preserved, should love him as a son or as a brother because of the fellowship of faith. Be subject to every kingdom and authority in those things which are pleasing to God, as to ministers of God and punishers of the wicked; pay all the fear that is owed to them, every contribution, every tax, every honor, gift, census tax. For this is the ordinance of God, to owe no one anything, except that of

αὐτοῖς ἐπιπλήσσειν, σωφρονίζοντες αὐτὰ μετὰ ἐμβριθείας· οὐ γὰρ ἀποκτενεῖτε αὐτὰ παιδεύοντες, μᾶλλον δὲ σώσετε αὐτά, καθώς που καὶ ὁ Σολομὼν ἐν τῇ Σοφίᾳ φησίν· «Παίδευε υἱόν σου, καὶ ἀναπαύσει σε· οὕτως γὰρ ἔσται σοι εὔελπις· σὺ μὲν γὰρ ῥάβδῳ πατάξεις αὐτόν, τὴν δὲ ψυχὴν αὐτοῦ ·ύσῃ ἐκ θανάτου.» Καὶ πάλιν λέγει ὁ αὐτὸς οὕτως· «Ὃς φείδεται τῆς βακτηρίας ἑαυτοῦ, μισεῖ τὸν ἑαυτοῦ υἱόν.» Καὶ ἑξῆς· «Κλάσον τὰς πλευρὰς αὐτοῦ, ὡς ἐστὶν νήπιος, μήποτε σκληρυνθεὶς ἀπειθήσῃ σοι.» Ὃς φείδεται οὖν παραινεῖν καὶ σωφρονίζειν τὸν ἑαυτοῦ υἱόν, μισεῖ τὸν ἴδιον παῖδα. Ἐκδιδάσκετε οὖν ὑμῶν τὰ τέκνα τὸν λόγον Κυρίου, στύφετε δὲ αὐτὰ καὶ δαρμοῖς καὶ ποιεῖτε ὑποτακτικά, ἀπὸ βρέφους διδάσκοντες αὐτὰ ἱερὰ γράμματα, ἡμέτερά τε καὶ θεῖα, καὶ πᾶσαν γραφὴν θείαν παραδιδόντες αὐτοῖς, ἄνεσιν αὐτοῖς μὴ διδόντες κατεξουσιάζειν ὑμῶν παρὰ τὴν ὑμετέραν γνώμην, μετὰ ὁμηλίκων εἰς συμπόσιον μὴ ἐῶντες αὐτὰ συμβάλλειν· οὕτω γὰρ εἰς ἀταξίαν ἐκτραπή σονται καὶ εἰς πορνείαν περιπεσοῦνται. Καὶ ἐὰν παρὰ τὴν τῶν γονέων ἀμέλειαν τοῦτο πάθωσιν, ἔνοχοι τῶν ψυχῶν αὐτῶν οἱ γεννήσαντες ὑπάρξουσιν· εἰ γὰρ τῇ τῶν γονέων ·ᾳθυμίᾳ σύνεισιν ἀκολάστοις, οἱ παῖδες ἁμαρτήσαντες οὐκ αὐτοὶ μόνοι κολασθήσονται, ἀλλὰ καὶ ὑπὲρ αὐτῶν οἱ γονεῖς αὐτῶν κριθήσονται. ∆ιὰ τοῦτο σπουδάζετε ὥρᾳ γάμου ζευγνύναι καὶ συναλλάσσειν αὐτά, ἵνα μὴ τῆς ἡλικίας ἐν τῇ ἀκμῇ ζεούσης ἔθη πορνοκόπα ἀποβῇ, καὶ ὑμεῖς ἀπαιτηθήσεσθε τὸν λόγον ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῆς κρίσεως ὑπὸ Κυρίου τοῦ Θεοῦ. Περὶ δὲ οἰκετῶν τί ἂν εἴποιμεν πλεῖον, ἢ ὅτι καὶ ὁ δοῦλος εὔνοιαν εἰσφερέτω πρὸς τὸν δεσπότην μετὰ φόβου Θεοῦ, κἂν ἀσεβὴς κἂν πονηρὸς ὑπάρχῃ, οὐκέτι μέντοι καὶ ὁμόνοιαν κατὰ τὴν θρησκείαν. Καὶ ὁ δεσπότης ἀγαπάτω τὸν οἰκέτην, κἂν διάφορος ᾖ, τὸ ἶσον κρινέτω, ᾗ ἄνθρωπος ὑπάρχει. Ὁ δὲ πιστὸν ἔχων δεσπότην, σῳζομένης αὐτῷ τῆς κυρίας, ἀγαπάτω καὶ ὡς δεσπότην καὶ ὡς ὁμόπιστον καὶ ὡς πατέρα, μὴ ὡς ὀφθαλμόδουλος, ἀλλ' ὡς φιλοδέσπο τος, εἰδώς, ὅτι ὁ Θεὸς αὐτῷ τὴν μισθαποδοσίαν ἀποτίσει τῆς ὑπηρεσίας. Ὡσαύτως καὶ ὁ κύριος ὁ πιστὸν ἔχων οἰκέτην, σῳζομένης αὐτῷ τῆς θεραπείας, ἀγαπάτω ὡς υἱὸν ἢ ὡς ἀδελφὸν διὰ τὴν τῆς πίστεως κοινωνίαν. Πάσῃ βασιλείᾳ καὶ ἀρχῇ ὑποτάγητε ἐν οἷς ἀρέσκει Θεῷ, ὡς Θεοῦ διακόνοις καὶ τῶν ἀσεβῶν τιμωροῖς· πάντα φόβον τὸν ὀφειλόμενον αὐτοῖς ἀποπληρώσατε, πᾶσαν εἰσφο ράν, πᾶν τέλος, πᾶσαν τιμήν, δόσιν, κῆνσον.
