Christ [sends] the evil demons to the abyss, and unwillingly removes them, by sending them out from those who have them, and although it was necessary for him to be admired for this, he did not escape the words of those accustomed to find fault. For they have dared to say, making the miracle an accusation: “This man does not cast out demons, except by Beelzebul. But others tempting him,” etc. But others, being pierced by the same goads of envy, sought to see a sign from heaven from him; almost shouting: Even if you cast out a wicked demon from a man, yet the deed is not great, nor does the thing done have proof of divine power. We have not yet seen anything like the ancient wonders. Show something that is unquestionably worked from above. Moses led the people across, making the way through the middle of the sea passable for them; he struck the rock with his rod, and showed it to be a mother of rivers; springs were brought forth from the flinty rock. 72.701 Likewise, Jesus [Joshua] after him made the sun stand still over Gibeon, and the moon over the valley of Arnon. He stopped the Jordan, and put a bond on its streams. But you have shown none of these things. For to wish to ask for a sign from heaven would imply nothing other than that they then had such thoughts about him. And what did Christ [say] to these things? 9But he, knowing their thoughts, etc.9 (A f. 155 b) First, he shows himself to be God, by knowing even what was secretly whispered among them; for he knew their thoughts. Then, to turn them from such terrible impiety, he says nothing from the Scriptures, for they were not paying attention, but were even about to misinterpret them, but from common occurrences. For a city, he says, and a house, if it is divided, is quickly dissolved; and a kingdom, than which nothing is more powerful If therefore I too, having a demon, cast out demons by him, there is sedition among demons; and if they stand against one another, their strength is destroyed. For what is genuine establishes kingdoms for those under its hand. And what establishes houses is that those within them are in no way opposed to one another. And the kingdom of Beelzebul would also be established, by his not willing to do contrary things to himself. How then does Satan cast out Satan? Therefore the demons are not sent out from men willingly. For Satan, he says, does not fight against himself; he does not rebuke his own guards, but rather strengthens his own kingdom. It remains, therefore, to understand that by divine power I crush Satan.(A f. 156) The most perverse multitude of the unholy Pharisees slandered Emmanuel, and dared to calumniate his glory, impiously naming him as being assisted by the collaborations of Beelzebul, in order to be able to drive out the evil spirits from the sick. Therefore also through Hosea the prophet, Emmanuel himself cried out against the unbridled speech of the Jews, saying: “Woe to them, for they have departed from me! They are wretched, because they have acted impiously against me. But I redeemed them, and they spoke lies against me.” 9By whom do your sons cast them out, (A f. 156) For the blessed disciples were Jews and from Jews according to the flesh. These have received authority over unclean spirits from God, and indeed they were delivering those who were possessed, calling out to them, “in the name of Jesus Christ.” When, therefore, he says, your sons, in my name crush Beelzebul, rebuking his guards, and effortlessly sending them out from those who have them, how is it not a clear blasphemy, having much ignorance intertwined with it, 72.704 to say that I borrow power from Beelzebul? You will therefore be condemned by the faith of the sons born of you, since they, having received authority and power from me, paralyze Satan, and send him out unwillingly from those who have him; but you say that I, using his powers, perform the
