is my beloved son, in whom I am well pleased. And then, he says, John fell down before him and said: I beg you, Lord, you baptize me. But he forbade him, saying: Let it be, for thus it is fitting for all things to be fulfilled.” 14. But see their teaching, which is falsified from all sides, how everything is lame, crooked, and has no rightness. For Cerinthus and Carpocrates, using the same so-called gospel among them *, wish to establish from the beginning of the Gospel according to Matthew, through the genealogy, that Christ was from the seed of Joseph and Mary. But these ones think other things. For having cut out the genealogies in Matthew, they begin to make their beginning as we said before, saying that “it happened,” he says, “in the days of Herod, king of Judea, when Caiaphas was high priest, there came a certain John by name, baptizing with a baptism of repentance in the Jordan river” and so on; for since they wish Jesus to be truly a man, as I said before, but for Christ to have come into being in him, the one who descended in the form of a dove, as we have already found in other heresies, and to have been joined to him, and for this Christ * to have been born from the seed of a man and a woman. But again they deny that he is a man, supposedly from the word which the Savior spoke when it was announced to him that “behold, your mother and your brothers are standing outside,” that “Who is my mother and my brothers? And stretching out his hand toward the disciples, he said: These are my brothers and my mother and sisters who do the will of my Father.” 1.352 From this, as I said, Ebion, being filled with all trickery, shows himself in many forms, so as to be a monster according to what I have previously shown above. 15. And they also use certain other books, supposedly the so-called Circuits of Peter written through Clement, having adulterated the things in them, but leaving a few true things, as Clement himself refutes them in everything from the encyclical letters he wrote which are read in the holy churches, because his faith and his teaching have a different character from the things adulterated by these men in his name in the Circuits. For he teaches virginity and they do not accept it; he praises Elijah and David and Samson and all the prophets, whom these men abominate. Therefore, in the Circuits they have transferred everything to themselves, lying against Peter in many ways, as if he were baptized every day for the sake of purification, just as they are; and they say that he abstained from animate things and 1.353 meats, as they also do, and from every other food made from flesh, since Ebion himself and the Ebionites completely abstain from these. But when you ask one of them for what reason they do not partake of animate things, having nothing to relate, they answer without understanding and say: Because they are from the intercourse and mingling of bodies we do not partake, so that all who are from the mingling of a man and a woman are abominable, according to what has been foolishly spewed forth by their mouth. 16. And they themselves receive a baptism besides the ones with which they are baptized daily. But they supposedly celebrate mysteries in imitation of the saints in the church from year to year with unleavened bread, and the other part of the mystery with water only. And, as I said, they establish two beings appointed by God, one the Christ and one the devil. And they say that Christ has received the lot of the age to come, but that the devil has been entrusted with this age, supposedly by a command of the Almighty according to the request of both of them. And for this reason they say that Jesus was born from the seed of a man 1.354 and was chosen, and thus by election was called son of God from the
