For when Caesar had written that some were to be beheaded, but if any should deny, these were to be released, at the beginning of the festival here—and this is a populous one, with people from all the nations coming together for it—he brought the blessed ones up to the tribunal, making a spectacle of them and parading them before the crowds; for which reason he examined them again, and as many as seemed to possess Roman citizenship, he beheaded them, but the rest he sent to the wild beasts. 5.1.48 And Christ was greatly glorified in those who had formerly denied, but then, contrary to the expectation of the pagans, confessed. For these were examined privately as if they were about to be released, and confessing, they were added to the lot of the martyrs; but those remained outside who had never had a trace of faith, nor a sense of the wedding garment, nor an idea of the fear of God, but even by their way of life blasphemed the Way, that is, the sons of perdition, 5.1.49 but all the rest were added to the church. And on the next day he entered along with Attalus, for the governor, to gratify the crowd, had given Attalus up again to the wild beasts; 5.1.51 And they, having passed through all the instruments of torture devised in the amphitheater and having endured a very great contest, at last were themselves sacrificed, Alexander neither groaning nor uttering any sound at all, but communing with God in his heart, 5.1.52 But Attalus, when he was placed on the iron chair and was being roasted, when the stench from his body was rising, said to the crowd in the Roman tongue, "Behold, this is to eat men, which you are doing; but we neither eat men nor do any other wicked thing." For Ponticus, encouraged by his sister, so that even the pagans saw that she was the one exhorting and strengthening him, after nobly enduring every torture, gave up his spirit; 5.1.55 But the blessed Blandina, last of all, like a noble mother who has encouraged her children and sent them forth victorious to the king, herself retracing all the contests of her children, hastened to them, rejoicing and exulting at her departure, as if called to a wedding feast, but not to
