desiring, to proceed to rebellion. And when much suspicion arose about him, finally some men, having been sent from the royal court, persuaded him to cease from the undertaking. He, therefore, declared Ardaburius, the son of Aspar, to be the cause of the tyranny, and sent his letters to the emperor. -But Zeno, the emperor's son-in-law, holding the consular office, sent men who would dislodge Indacus from the so-called hill of Papirius. For Neon was the first to lair there; after whom Papirius and his son Indacus, doing violence to all the neighbors, and killing those passing by. Help was also sent against Zanon, as they were plundering the places around Trapezus. At that time the nation of the Goths also rose up for war, they who inhabited Galatia towards the West; who formerly were named after Alaric; and furthermore also the barbarian multitude in Paeonia, formerly marshaled under Valimer, but after his death under Theudomer, the brother of Valimer. 207 Ibid.: That the emperor of the West Anthemius, having fallen into a severe illness due to sorcery, punished many who were convicted for this; especially Romanus, who had served in the office of magister and was enrolled among the patricians, and who was a very close associate of Ricimer; on account of which he, being distressed, left Rome, and recalled six thousand men marshaled under him for the war against the Vandals. 208 ιβιδ.: That in the reign of the emperor Leo, Jordanes the general of the East and consul, came into extreme danger; and with him Misael (Michael?) and Cosmas, who were chamberlains of the palace, because, having neglected to guard the palace while the emperor was dwelling outside, they permitted Jordanes, who wished to inspect the interior. 209 Ibid.: That Ricimer, having come into a dispute with Anthemius, the emperor of the West, and this despite having been betrothed to his daughter Alypia, stirred up a civil war within the city, for 9 (read 5) months; and on the one hand the magistrates and the people fought alongside Anthemius, but for Ricimer the multitude of his own barbarians. And Odoacer was also with him, being by race one of the so-called Sciri, and the son of Idico, and brother of Onoulphus and Armatius, who became a bodyguard and a slayer. And Anthemius lived in the palace; but Ricimer, having blocked the areas around the Tiber, was distressing those inside with famine. Then, when an engagement occurred between them, a great part of Anthemius's faction fell; and having won over the rest by treachery, Ricimer proclaims Olybrius emperor. Thus for five whole months a civil war prevailed in Rome; until Anthemius's men gave in to the barbarians and left the emperor deserted, mingling with the beggars themselves, he is among the refugees of the martyr Chrysogonus. And there he is beheaded by Gundobad, the nephew of Ricimer, having reigned for five years, 3 months, and eighteen days. 2. But Ricimer deemed him worthy of a royal burial, and raised Olybrius to the imperial power (him). And Olybrius having taken over the rule of the Romans in the aforementioned manner, Ricimer ended his life within 30 days, having vomited a great deal of blood. But Olybrius, after him, having survived for only 13 days, being afflicted with dropsy, passed away, being numbered among the emperors for six months. And Gundobad, having succeeded to Ricimer's position, being his nephew, raises Glycerius, who held the rank of Count of the Domestics, to the imperial power. But Leo, the emperor of the East, having learned of the proclamation of Glycerius, marches against him, having appointed Nepos as general. Who, when he captured Rome, subdued Glycerius without a fight, and having driven him from the palace, ordains him bishop of Salona, after he had luxuriated in power for 8 months. Immediately, therefore, Nepos, having been proclaimed emperor, ruled Rome.
