of his belly shall flow living water. But this he said concerning the Spirit, which they that believe in him were to receive." And again: "But whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst. But the water that I will give him shall become in him a spring of water leaping up to eternal life." The springs of salvation, therefore, are either the holy apostles, or spiritual words rained down from the Holy Spirit. And the prophetic words, were called springs of Israel, as David says: "In the congregations bless God the Lord from the springs of Israel." But if the idolatrous people is accused, [because] "they have forsaken Me, the spring of living water;" it is clear that he who believes, and is watered with the divine doctrines, draws water with gladness from the springs of salvation, from which the Egyptians are prophesied to drink, and those who ministered this saving drink to them. But the gladness of those who drink this is represented by, "My soul thirsted for God, the strong, the living;" for as much as one thirsts, so much does he rejoice in drinking. And he draws water with gladness who meditates on the law of the Lord day and night. "For the mouth of the righteous will meditate on wisdom." For by seeking rightly, understanding the spiritual will of Scripture, he will draw water with gladness, and will find the Word of God, the living water, who revealed the apostles through the spirit, pouring it forth to all who are ignorant. Concerning whom David says: "The springs of the waters were seen, and the foundations of the world were discovered." For Christ is the chosen stone for the foundations of Zion, said to be placed by the Father, that is, of the Church. For on him through faith we are built a spiritual house, into a holy temple, into a dwelling place of God in the spirit. And the stones after him, that is, the foundations of the world, are those who through the preaching uphold us in the stability of faith and truth. It should be noted that the present discourse mentions Jesus our Savior, according to the Hebrew tongue, instead of Savior, always containing the name Jesus. In "Behold God my Savior." And in "he has become my salvation." And in "from the springs of salvation." For it was fitting for the prophecy concerning the one from the root of Jesse to bear the name of the Savior Jesus. For he was the one prophesied. Upon these things he addresses the evangelists, what they must say to those discipled from 2065 Egypt, saying, "Hymn the Lord; cry out His name." Having told them to command these things to others, when they themselves are filled with the spiritual drink. But the cry is a voice having a magnitude able to reach even those far off. Cry out, therefore, instead of, "Do not think small things concerning God;" but theologize about him with a great mind, so that the word may be heard even by those far from salvation, because of the clarity of the teaching. Which he indicates through the following, saying, "Proclaim among the nations His glorious deeds. Tell of His wonders." That is, show to the foolish the order concerning the world, so that they may be brought to the love of the Creator. And he says the high things are as many as he has made in heaven and on earth, both intelligible and perceptible. Or concerning the goodness in us, that he exalts the humble and the contrite in heart. For those humbled by their own sin he has highly exalted in glory. But some say that the one who has just been initiated speaks the preceding things, who, having drawn from the springs of salvation, has so advanced as to show an apostolic ministry to others, also saying to hymn the Lord. But to whom he commands to cry out, he brought forth, saying: "Proclaim among the nations His glorious deeds." For how is it not glorious: the re-creation of the human race, the demolition of demonic tyranny, the freedom of captives, the recovery of sight for the blind, justification, sanctification, the adoption of those formerly exiled from God, the knowledge of God, the dead being raised, lepers being cleansed? Those in sicknesses were strengthened; demons were driven out; he calmed the raging sea; in which things you rejoice, he says, you who dwell in Zion, who have a firm faith in the Church. For Zion is the evangelical
