for now we are and we see and we hear about certain monks and their monasteries.
(208) For this reason I exhort your love, my holy fathers and servants of God, do not disregard my words, of your unworthy father, nor let my sayings appear as nonsense before you. For even if I am weak and full of countless sins, yet see and examine carefully that I have advised you nothing outside of the commandments of God and the divine Scriptures. Therefore make a good beginning and give me a little zeal, so that, strengthened by your holy prayers, I may recover and rub my face and wash my eyes and be roused from the deep sleep of sloth, and in return for the good things which you do for me, your lowly servant, if not worthily, yet at least according to my ability, I may repay with good words—which the grace of God gives in the opening of my unclean mouth—your love. Yes, my brothers, I beseech you, do not overlook my supplication, but just as from one half-dead and completely mute you have granted me to speak before your honor, so also grant me your will, so that by cutting it off you may live the life of the martyrs and prize-winners of Christ, and I from this day will more and more be disposed to lay down for you my whole soul with my body to a voluntary death, which I pray may become for me a provision for the life to come as I depart in Christ Jesus our Lord, to whom be the glory and the power with the Father and the Holy Spirit, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
Concerning the resurrection of Christ. And of what sort it is or how the resurrection of Christ occurs in us, and in it the resurrection of the soul. And what is the mystery of this resurrection. Spoken after Pascha on the

Discourse 13. (209) Brothers and fathers, already Pascha, the joyous day, of all gladness
and delight, the resurrection of Christ—which always arrives according to the cycle of time, or rather which occurs each day and everlastingly in those who know its mystery—has filled our hearts with joy and ineffable exultation, releasing at the same time the labor of the all-venerable fast, or rather, to say, perfecting and at the same time comforting our souls, wherefore, having summoned all the faithful together to rest and thanksgiving, it has, as you see, passed. Let us therefore give thanks to the Lord, who has brought us across the sea of the fast and led us with gladness into the harbor of His resurrection; let us give thanks to Him, both those who well and eagerly, with fervent (210) purpose and struggles of virtue, completed the course of the fast, and those who were weak in these things through negligence and weakness of soul, since He it is who gives the crowns superabundantly to the zealous and the worthy rewards for their works, and again grants pardon to the weaker, as merciful and loving-kindness. For He sees the dispositions of our souls and our intentions rather than the labors of the body, by which we train ourselves for virtue, whether intensifying the askesis with eagerness of soul or making it less than the zealous on account of bodily weakness, and according to our intentions He measures out the rewards and the gifts of the Spirit to each

Εἰ γάρ καί ἀσθενής εἰμι καί μυρίων γέμων ἁμαρτημάτων, ἀλλ᾿ ἴδετε καί σκοπήσατε ἀκριβῶς ὅτι οὐδέν ὑμῖν ἔξωθεν τῶν τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐντολῶν καί τῶν θείων Γραφῶν συνεβούλευσα. Λόγος ΙΓ ΄. (209) Ἀδελφοί και πατέρες, ἤδη τό Πάσχα, ἡ χαρμόσυνος ἡμέρα, ἡ πάσης εὐφροσύνης
καί θυμηδίας, τῆς τοῦ Χριστοῦ ἀναστάσεως κατά περίοδον τοῦ χρόνου παραγινομένης ἀεί μᾶλλον δέ καθ᾿ ἑκάστην καί ἀεννάως γινομένης ἐν τοῖς εἰδόσι τό μυστήριον ταύτης, χαρᾶς καί ἀγαλλιάσεως ἀφάτου ἐπλήρωσε τάς καρδίας ἡμῶν, λύσασα ἐπί τό αὐτό τῆς πανσέπτου νηστείας τόν κόπον ἤ μᾶλλον εἰπεῖν, τελειώσασα καί ἅμα παρακαλέσασα ἡμῶν τάς ψυχάς, διό καί πρός ἀνάπαυσιν καί εὐχαριστίαν πάντας ὁμοῦ τούς πιστούς προσκαλεσαμένη, ὡς ὁρᾶτε, διῆλθεν. Ὁρᾷ γάρ τάς διαθέσεις ἡμῶν τῶν ψυχῶν καί τάς προαιρέσεις μᾶλλον ἤ τούς κόπους τοῦ σώματος, δι᾿ ὧν γυμνάζομεν πρός ἀρετήν ἑαυτούς, ἤ πλεῖον τήν ἄσκησιν προθυμίᾳ ψυχῆς ἐπιτείνοντες ἤ ἔλαττον δι᾿ ἀσθένειαν σώματος ταύτην τῶν σπουδαίων ποιούμενοι, καί κατά τάς προθέσεις ἡμῶν ἀντιμετρεῖ τά ἔπαθλα καί τά τοῦ Πνεύματος ἑκάστῳ
