and the demons believe and confess Christ the Lord to be God; "For we know you," they say, "the Son of God," and elsewhere: "These men are servants of the most high God." But nevertheless, such faith will benefit neither the demons nor those men themselves. For there is no benefit from this faith, for it is dead according to the divine apostle; "For faith," he says, "without works is dead," just as works are without faith. But how is it dead? Because it does not have the life-giving God in itself, because it has not acquired in itself the one who said: "He who loves me will keep my commandments, and I and the Father will come and make our home with him," so that by his presence he might raise from the dead the one who possesses it and give him life and grant him to behold the one who has been raised in him and who raised him. Such faith, therefore, is dead for this reason, or rather, dead are those who possess it without works. For faith in God is always alive and, being alive, gives life to those who approach and receive it with a good intention, which even before the working of the commandments has led many from death to life and pointed out Christ and God. And they would have been preserved by them—such as they had manifestly become by faith alone—if they had remained in his commandments and kept them until death; but since they were turned aside like a crooked bow (215) and were ensnared by their former deeds, they were rightly found to have been shipwrecked immediately with regard to faith and have miserably deprived themselves of the true wealth, which is Christ the God. So that we may not suffer this, let us keep, I beg, the commandments of God with all our strength, so that we may enjoy the good things both present and future, I mean the vision of Christ himself, which may we all attain by the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever. Amen.

On repentance and the beginning of the monastic life. And how one, advancing in virtue by a path and in order in the working of the commandments, comes to perfection.

Discourse 14. (216) Brothers and fathers, he who has despised all things seen and his very own

soul, so that he might be able to show forth genuine repentance according to the Lord's commandment and begin this work, does not think to learn this from himself, but having approached a skilled and experienced man, having subjected himself to him with much fear and trembling and with intense attention, he learns from him and is taught the spiritual work of virtuous deeds, and what one who is repenting ought to do; and I speak of fear and trembling lest he fail to attain such a good, and as some unapproved worker of the commandments be condemned to the eternal fire. For considering that man's words as coming from the mouth of God and as being the cause of life and death in being kept or neglected, he keeps them precisely; and so, that I may not lengthen the discourse by saying many things, having begun (217) and clinging with unwavering faith to the promises of God, he makes progress according to God day by day, and advancing on the path he increases in spiritual stature, and becomes a perfect man in Christ the God.

καί οἱ δαίμονες πιστεύουσι καί Θεόν εἶναι τόν ∆εσπότην ὁμολογοῦσι Χριστόν· "Οἴδαμεν γάρ σε, φασί, τόν Υἱόν τοῦ Θεοῦ", καί ἀλλαχοῦ· "Οὗτοι οἱ ἄνθρωποι δοῦλοι τοῦ Θεοῦ τοῦ ὑψίστου εἰσίν". Ἀλλ᾿ ὅμως οὔτε τούς δαίμονας οὔτε τούς ἀνθρώπους αὐτούς ἡ τοιαύτη πίστις ὠφελήσει. Οὐδέ γάρ τῆς πίστεως ταύτης ὄφελος, νεκρά γάρ ἐστι κατά τόν θεῖον ἀπόστολον· "Ἡ πίστις γάρ, φησί, δίχα τῶν ἔργων νεκρά ἐστιν", ὥσπερ καί τά ἔργα δίχα πίστεως. Νεκρά δέ πῶς; Ὅτι τόν ζωογονοῦντα Θεόν οὐκ ἔχει ἐν ἑαυτῇ, ὅτι τόν εἰπόντα· "Ὁ ἀγαπῶν με τάς ἐντολάς τάς ἐμάς τηρήσει, καί ἐγώ καί ὁ Πατήρ ἐλευσόμεθα καί μονήν παρ᾿ αὐτῷ ποιησόμεθα" οὐκ ἐκτήσατο ἐν ἑαυτῇ, ἵνα τῇ παρουσίᾳ αὐτοῦ ἐξαναστήσῃ τόν κεκτημένον αὐτήν ἐκ νεκρῶν καί ζωοποιήσῃ αὐτόν καί τόν ἀναστάντα ἐν αὐτῷ καί αὐτόν ἀναστήσαντα κατιδεῖν χαρίσηται. Νεκρά οὖν ἐστιν ἡ τοιαύτη πίστις τούτου γε ἕνεκα, μᾶλλον δέ νεκροί οἱ ταύτην χωρίς τῶν ἔργων κεκτημένοι εἰσίν. Ἡ γάρ πίστις, ἡ εἰς Θεόν, ἀεί ζῇ καί ζῶσα ζωοποιεῖ τούς ἐκ προθέσεως ἀγαθῆς προσερχομένους καί ὑποδεχομένους αὐτήν, ἥτις καί πρό τῆς ἐργασίας τῶν ἐντολῶν πολλούς ἐκ τοῦ θανάτου εἰς την ζωήν ἀνήγαγε καί τόν Χριστόν καί Θεόν ὑπέδειξε. Καί ἔμελλον ἄν, εἰ ἐνέμειναν ταῖς αὐτοῦ ἐντολαῖς καί ταύτας μέχρι θανάτου ἐφύλαξαν, διαφυλαχθῆναι καί αὐτοί ὑπ᾿ αὐτῶν - οἷοι δηλονότι γεγόνασιν ὑπό μόνης τῆς πίστεως· ἐπεί δέ μετεστράφησαν ὡς τόξον στρεβλόν (215) καί ταῖς προτέραις αὐτῶν περιεπάρησαν πράξεσιν, εἰκότως εὐθύς καί περί τήν πίστιν εὑρέθησαν ναυαγήσαντες καί τοῦ ἀληθινοῦ πλούτου, ὅς ἐστι Χριστός ὁ Θεός, ἑαυτούς δυστυχῶς ἀπεστέρησαν. Ὅπερ ἵνα μή πάθωμεν καί ἡμεῖς, τηρήσωμεν, ἀξιῶ, τάς ἐντολάς τοῦ Θεοῦ ὅση δύναμις, ἵνα καί τῶν παρόντων καί τῶν μελόντων ἀγαθῶν, λέγω δή αὐτῆς τῆς τοῦ Χριστοῦ θέας, ἐπαπολαύσωμεν, ἧς γένοιτο πάντας ἡμᾶς ἐπιτυχεῖν χάριτι τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ, ᾧ ἡ δόξα εἰς τούς αἰῶνας. Περί μετανοίας καί ἀρχῆς βίου μοναδικοῦ. Καί πῶς τις ὁδῷ καί τάξει προβαίνων εἰς ἀρετήν ἐν τῇ τῶν ἐντολῶν ἐργασίᾳ εἰς τελειότητα ἔρχεται.

Λόγος Ι∆΄. (216) Ἀδελφοί καί πατέρες, ὁ πάντων καταφρονήσας τῶν ὁρωμένων καί αὐτῆς αὐτοῦ

τῆς ψυχῆς, ἵνα γνησίαν μετάνοιαν δυνηθῇ ἐπιδείξασθαι κατά τήν ἐντολήν τοῦ Κυρίου καί τοῦ ἔργου τούτου ἐνάρξηται, οὐκ ἀφ᾿ ἑαυτοῦ τοῦτο μαθεῖν οἴεται, ἀλλά τεχνίτῃ καί ἐμπείρῳ ἀνδρί προσελθών, μετά φόβου καί τρόμου πολλοῦ καί μετά προσοχῆς συντόνου τούτῳ ὑποταγείς, μανθάνει ἐξ αὐτοῦ καί διδάσκεται τήν πνευματικήν ἐργασίαν τῶν ἐναρέτων πράξεων, καί τίνα μετανοῶν χρή ποιεῖν· φόβου δέ λέγω καί τρόμου τοῦ μή ἀποτυχεῖν αὐτόν τοῦ τοιούτου καλοῦ, καί ὡς ἀδόκιμόν τινα ἐργάτην τῶν ἐντολῶν καταδικασθῆναι τῷ αἰωνίῳ πυρί. Ὡς γάρ ἐκ στόματος Θεοῦ τούς ἐκείνου λόγους ἐξερχομένους λογιζόμενος καί ὡς αἰτίου ὄντας ζωῆς καί θανάτου ἐν τῷ φυλάσσεσθαι ἤ παρορᾶσθαι αὐτούς, ἀκριβῶς φυλάσσει αὐτούς· καί οὕτως ἵνα μή πολλά λέγων μηκύνω τόν λόγον ἐναρξάμενος (217) πίστει τε ἀδιστάκτῳ τῶν ἐπαγγελιῶν τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐκκρεμάμενος, προκόπτει κατά Θεόν ὁσημέραι, καί ὁδῷ προβαίνων αὐξάνει τήν πνευματικήν ἡλικίαν, καί γίνεται ἀνήρ τέλειος ἐν Χριστῷ τῷ Θεῷ.
