proclaiming and rejecting the resurrection of bodies. Let their followers also be ashamed, who seem to be Christians, but in deed think the things of the Greeks, who say that the heaven is spherical. For they themselves say nothing other than what the Greeks proclaim, that the world is always thus in the corruption of bodies and that a resurrection of bodies never happens, nor another state of being. Let the Manichaeans and Marcionites be ashamed, who cast away the flesh and proclaim it to be the creation of an evil principle. 5.179 Let all be ashamed who reject our flesh and who reject our souls with their mind, that is, Eutyches, Arius, Apollinaris, and all those with them. Let all the heretics be ashamed who do not confess one God known and worshipped in three hypostases, existing as creator of heaven and earth, and the resurrection of our flesh. Let the Samaritans be ashamed, who confess neither the resurrection of our flesh, nor angel, nor spirit. Let the unbelievers of the Jews be ashamed, who did not receive the awaited one, nor confess a Christian resurrection, but such a one as we now live, "marrying and being given in marriage." 5.180 But well done, well done, joy and gladness to those who are truly Christians, who are persuaded by all the divine Scripture, both the Old and New Testament, who were guided by the law and have believed in Christ and in all that he preached and still says: "The law and the prophets proclaimed until John," and: "From the days of John the Baptist the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force," so that it might say that: As many as do violence to themselves and live righteously and do not follow their own ideas, but believe in God, these obtain it. 5.181 Indeed, also the mother of John and James, having asked the Lord for one to be at his right and one at his left in the kingdom, he answered her that: "This is not mine to give, but for whom, he says, it has been prepared by my Father," as if to say: The gift of God is extended to all, to rise from the dead and to become incorruptible and immortal and immutable, but to be preferred to others, this is not a gift, but the preparation of God for those who believe and live well. For again the Lord says: "Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you," and when it was prepared he says, adding, "from the foundation of the world." 5.182 Therefore the cosmographer Moses and all the rest of the prophets and ancient men, having spoken only about these two states of being and not having mentioned others, but having proclaimed and written only these, and not only this, but also the Lord having come, and his disciples, the evangelists and apostles, preached nothing other than these two states of being and these alone. Who is still lacking in faith, as to believe that these things are not true? Who will not be awed by the multitude of predictions, the outcomes of the prophecies, the multitude of signs and paradoxes and wonders, the very way of life of all the saints and of the Lord Christ and of his apostles, the harmony of the Old and New Testament? 5.183 Which of them disagreed with the others by explaining the heaven as spherical, or preached the pre-existence of this world, or declared the world to be eternal, or rejected the resurrection of our bodies, or the economy through Christ of the just men ascending into heaven? But all, as if guided by one divine Spirit, foretold the same things both through words and through deeds or types, and all look to the future state of being. 5.184 And the Lord Christ himself also makes clear in the Gospels, in which the perfect just and the middling and the impious are to dwell; and concerning the perfect just, as when he calls them to himself saying: "Come, you who are blessed by the Father

Αἰσχυνέσθωσαν καὶ οἱ τούτων ἐπακόλουθοι, οἱ χριστιανίζειν μὲν δοκοῦντες, τῷ δὲ ἔργῳ τὰ τῶν Ἑλλήνων φρονοῦντες, οἱ λέγοντες σφαιροειδῆ εἶναι τὸν οὐρανόν. Οὐδὲν γὰρ ἕτερον καὶ αὐτοὶ λέγουσιν, ὧν οἱ Ἕλληνες καταγγέλλουσιν, ἀεὶ τὸν κόσμον οὕτως ἐν φθορᾷ τῶν σωμάτων εἶναι καὶ ἀνάστασιν σωμάτων μηδέποτε γίνεσθαι, μήτε ἑτέραν κατάστασιν. Αἰσχυνέσθωσαν μανιχαῖοι καὶ μαρκιωνισταὶ τὰς σάρκας ἀποβαλλόμενοι καὶ πονηρᾶς ἀρχῆς αὐτὰς ποιήματα καταγγέλλοντες. 5.179 Αἰσχυνέσθωσαν πάντες ὅσοι ἀθετοῦσι τὴν ἡμετέραν σάρκα καὶ ὅσοι ἀθετοῦσι τὰς ἡμετέρας ψυχὰς σὺν τῷ νοῒ αὐτῶν, τουτέστιν Εὐτυχής, Ἄρειος, Ἀπολλινάριος, καὶ πάντες οἱ κατ' αὐτούς. Αἰσχυνέσθωσαν πάντες οἱ αἱρετικοὶ οἱ μὴ ὁμολογοῦντες ἕνα Θεὸν ἐν τρισὶν ὑποστάσεσι γνωριζόμενόν τε καὶ προσκυνούμενον, ποιητὴν οὐρανοῦ καὶ γῆς ὑπάρχοντα, καὶ τῆς ἡμετέρας σαρκὸς τὴν ἀνάστασιν. Αἰσχυνέσθωσαν Σαμαρεῖται μήτε τῆς ἡμετέρας σαρκὸς ἀνάστασιν ὁμολογοῦντες, μήτε ἄγγελον, μήτε πνεῦμα. Αἰσχυνέσθωσαν τῶν Ἰουδαίων οἱ ἄπιστοι οἱ τὸν προσδοκώμενον μὴ δεξάμενοι, μήτε χριστιανικὴν ἀνάστασιν ὁμολογοῦντες, ἀλλὰ τοιαύτην οἵαν νῦν πολιτευόμεθα "γαμοῦντες καὶ γαμιζόμενοι". 5.180 Εὖγε δὲ εὖγε, χαρά τε καὶ ἀγαλλίασις τοῖς ὄντως χριστιανοῖς, τοῖς πειθομένοις πάσῃ τῇ θείᾳ Γραφῇ, Παλαιᾷ τε καὶ Καινῇ ∆ιαθήκῃ, τοῖς ποδηγηθεῖσιν ἐκ τοῦ νόμου καὶ πιστεύσασι Χριστῷ καὶ πᾶσιν οἷς ἐκήρυξε καὶ ἔτι λέγοντι· "Ὁ νόμος καὶ οἱ προφῆται ἕως Ἰωάννου προεκήρυξαν", καί· "Ἀπὸ τῶν ἡμερῶν Ἰωάννου τοῦ Βαπτιστοῦ ἡ βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν βιάζεται, καὶ βιασταὶ ἁρπάζουσιν αὐτήν", ἵνα εἴπῃ ὅτι· Ὅσοι ἑαυτοὺς βιάζονται καὶ πολιτεύονται δικαίως καὶ μὴ ταῖς ἰδίαις ἐννοίαις ἐξακολουθοῦσιν, ἀλλὰ τῷ Θεῷ πιστεύουσιν, ἐκεῖνοι ταύτης τυγχάνουσιν. 5.181 Ἀμέλει καὶ ἡ μήτηρ Ἰωάννου καὶ Ἰακώβου αἰτησαμένη τὸν Κύριον ἕνα ἐκ δεξιῶν αὐτοῦ εἶναι καὶ ἕνα ἐξ εὐωνύμων ἐν τῇ βασιλείᾳ, ἀπεκρίνατο αὐτῇ ὅτι· "Οὐκ ἔστιν ἐμὸν τοῦτο δοῦναι, ἀλλ' οἷς, φησίν, ἡτοίμασται παρὰ τοῦ Πατρός μου", ὡσανεί· Τὸ μὲν δῶρον τοῦ Θεοῦ πᾶσιν ἐφήπλωται, τὸ ἀναστῆναι ἐκ τῶν νεκρῶν καὶ γενέσθαι ἀφθάρτους καὶ ἀθανάτους καὶ ἀτρέπτους, τὸ δὲ προτιμᾶσθαι ἑτέρων, οὐ δῶρον τοῦτο, ἀλλ' ἑτοιμασία τοῦ Θεοῦ τοῖς καλῶς πιστεύουσι καὶ βιοῦσι. Πάλιν γὰρ λέγει ὁ Κύριος· "∆εῦτε, οἱ εὐλογημένοι τοῦ Πατρός μου, κληρονομήσατε τὴν ἡτοιμασμένην ὑμῖν βασιλείαν", καὶ πότε ἡτοιμάσθη φησὶν "ἀπὸ καταβολῆς κόσμου" προσειπών. 5.182 Ὁ κοσμογράφος τοίνυν Μωϋσῆς καὶ οἱ λοιποὶ πάντες προφῆται καὶ ἀρχαῖοι ἄνθρωποι περὶ τῶν δύο τούτων καταστάσεων καὶ μόνον εἰπόντες καὶ ἑτέρας μὴ μνημονεύσαντες, ἀλλὰ ταύτας μόνας προκηρύξαντες καὶ συγγραψάμενοι, οὐ μόνον δέ, ἀλλὰ καὶ ὁ Κύριος παραγεγονὼς καὶ οἱ τούτου μαθηταί, εὐαγγελισταὶ καὶ ἀπόστολοι, οὐδὲν ἕτερον ἐκήρυξαν ἢ τὰς δύο ταύτας καὶ μόνας καταστάσεις. Τίς ἔτι λείπεται πίστεως, ὡς ὅτι ταῦτα οὐκ εἰσὶν ἀληθῆ; Τίς οὐκ ἐντραπήσεται τὸν ὄχλον τῶν προρρήσεων, τὰς ἐκβάσεις τῶν προφητειῶν, τὸν ὄχλον τῶν σημείων καὶ τῶν παραδόξων καὶ τῶν θαυμάτων, αὐτὴν τὴν πολιτείαν πάντων τῶν ἁγίων καὶ τοῦ ∆εσπότου Χριστοῦ καὶ τῶν αὐτοῦ ἀποστόλων, τὴν συμφωνίαν τῆς Παλαιᾶς καὶ Καινῆς ∆ιαθήκης; 5.183 Τίς ἐξ αὐτῶν διεφώνησε πρὸς τοὺς ἄλλους σφαιροειδῆ τὸν οὐρανὸν ἐξηγησάμενος, ἢ προΰπαρξιν τούτου τοῦ κόσμου ἐκήρυξεν, ἢ ἀΐδιον εἶναι τὸν κόσμον ἀπεφήνατο, ἢ ἠθέτησε τὴν τῶν σωμάτων ἡμῶν ἀνάστασιν, ἢ τὴν διὰ τοῦ Χριστοῦ γενομένην οἰκονομίαν τοῦ ἀνέρχεσθαι τοὺς δικαίους ἀνθρώπους εἰς τὸν οὐρανόν; Ἀλλὰ πάντες, ὡς ἐξ ἑνὸς θείου Πνεύματος ποδηγούμενοι, ταὐτὰ καὶ διὰ λόγων καὶ δι' ἔργων ἢ τύπων προεμήνυσαν καὶ πάντες εἰς τὴν μέλλουσαν κατάστασιν ἀφορῶσιν. 5.184 Καὶ αὐτὸς δὲ ὁ ∆εσπότης Χριστὸς ἐν Εὐαγγελίοις δηλοῖ, ἐν οἷς μέλλουσιν ἀναστρέφεσθαι οἱ τέλειοι δίκαιοι καὶ οἱ μέσοι καὶ οἱ ἀσεβεῖς· καὶ περὶ μὲν τῶν τελείων δικαίων, ὡς ὅταν προσκαλῆται αὐτοὺς πρὸς ἑαυτὸν λέγων· "∆εῦτε, οἱ εὐλογημένοι τοῦ Πατρός
