Of what promises then of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God? Hear with understanding what He promises us: "Truly, I say to you, there is joy in heaven over one sinner who repents," and again: "Whoever comes to me"—clearly by such a path—"I will never cast out," and again: "If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink," and: "Whoever believes in me will never see death," and elsewhere: "Draw near to me, and I will draw near to you," and: "Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest," and elsewhere: "Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I and the Father through the Spirit will come and make our home with him," and: "If you then," He says, "being evil men, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?". Therefore, hoping in these undertakings and promises of God with unwavering faith, as we said, with much eagerness and unrestrained impulse he tirelessly fulfills all His commandments. And the first commandment is this: "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand," and again: (218) "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.". And God, wishing to teach us in addition to these things how we must ask and through what words and deeds, said: "Whoever would be first among you must be last of all and servant of all and minister of all. For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted.".

He who unceasingly holds all these things and things like them in his mind and is occupied with them night and day, both intellectually and perceptibly reckoning these things and diligently working them out, is separated little by little from the memory of the world, of the affairs of life, of possessions, of relatives and friends, and is accordingly joined to spiritual things. Thus, advancing day by day, he perceives how the thoughts of prejudices gradually recede, then how these prejudices themselves are diminished, and the heart, being softened, comes to humility; and how again this [heart] begets thoughts that produce humility. And so, perceiving these things, he barely comes through all of them to compunction and tears. He comes, however, through many tribulations, and being more humbled is more filled with compunction. For humility begets mourning, and mourning nourishes its mother and makes her grow. And this work, being accomplished through the fulfillment of the commandments, washes away—O the wonder!—every stain from the soul, and drives out every passion and every evil desire—I mean both bodily and worldly. (219) And thus a man becomes free in soul from every earthly desire; not only from bodily bonds, but indeed as when someone takes off a garment and becomes completely naked. And reasonably so; for the soul first takes off insensibility, which the divine apostle calls a veil, which lies on the hearts of the unbelieving Jews, but indeed even now, everyone who does not perform the commandments of the new grace with all his strength and a fervent heart has such a veil lying upon the intellect of his soul and is not able to be carried up to the height of the knowledge of the Son of God. Then just as one who has physically disrobed clearly sees the wounds on his body, so too does this one then see clearly the passions present in his soul, such as love of glory, love of money, resentfulness, hatred of brethren, envy, jealousy, strife, conceit, and the rest in order. Therefore, applying the commandments as medicines, and temptations as cauteries to these, and being humbled and mourning and fervently seeking God's help, he clearly sees the grace of the Holy Spirit coming and one by one of these

Ποίων οὖν ἐπαγγελιῶν αὐτοῦ τοῦ Κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τοῦ Υἱοῦ τοῦ Θεοῦ; Ἄκουε συνετῶς οἷα ἡμῖν ἐπαγγέλλεται· "Ἀμήν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι χαρά γίνεται ἐν τῷ οὐρανῷ ἐπί ἑνί ἁμαρτωλῷ μετανοοῦντι", καί πάλιν· "Τόν ἐρχόμενον πρός με - διά τῆς τοιαύτης δηλονότι ὁδοῦ οὐ μή ἐκβάλω ἔξω", καί αὖθις· "Ὁ διψῶν ἐρχέσθω πρός με καί πινέτω", καί· "Ὁ πιστεύων εἰς ἐμέ οὐ μή ὄψεται θάνατον εἰς τόν αἰῶνα", καί ἀλλαχοῦ· "Ἐγγίσατέ μοι καί ἐγγιῶ ὑμῖν", καί· "∆εῦτε πρός με πάντες οἱ κοπιῶντες καί πεφορτισμένοι, κἀγώ ἀναπαύσω ὑμᾶς", καί ἑτέρωθι· "Ὁ ἔχων τάς ἐντολάς μου καί τηρῶν αὐτάς, ἐκεῖνός ἐστιν ὁ ἀγαπῶν με· καί ὁ ἀγαπῶν με ἀγαπηθήσεται ὑπό τοῦ Πατρός μου, καί ἐγώ καί ὁ Πατήρ διά τοῦ Πνεύματος ἐλευσόμεθα καί μονήν παρ᾿ αὐτῷ ποιήσομεν", καί· "Εἰ ὑμεῖς, φησί, πονηροί ἄνθρωποι ὄντες, οἴδατε δόματα ἀγαθά διδόναι τοῖς τέκνοις ὑμῶν, οὐ πολλῷ μᾶλλον ὁ Πατήρ ὑμῶν ὁ οὐράνιος δώσει Πνεῦμα Ἅγιον τοῖς αἰτοῦσιν αὐτόν;". Ἐν ταύταις οὖν ταῖς ὑποσχέσεσι καί ταῖς ἐπαγγελίαις τοῦ Θεοῦ πίστει ἀδιστάκτῳ ἐλπίζων, ὡς ἔφαμεν, πολλῇ προθυμίᾳ καί ἀκατασχέτῳ ὁρμῇ πάσας τάς αὐτοῦ ἐντολάς ἀόκνως ἐπιτέλει. Πρώτη δέ ἐντολή αὕτη ἐστί· "Μετανοεῖτε, ἤγγικε γάρ ἡ βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν", καί αὖθις· (218) "Αἰτεῖτε καί δοθήσεται ὑμῖν, ζητεῖτε καί εὑρήσετε, κρούετε καί ἀνοιγήσεται ὑμῖν· πᾶς γάρ ὁ αἰτῶν λαμβάνει καί ὁ ζητῶν εὑρίσκει καί τῷ κρούοντι ἀνοιγήσεται". ∆ιδάξει δέ ἡμᾶς ἐπί τούτοις βουλόμενος ὁ Θεός, ὅπως δεῖ αἰτεῖσθαι καί διά ποίων ῥημάτων καί ἔργων, ἔφη· "Ὁ θέλων ἐν ὑμῖν εἶναι πρῶτος, γενέσθω πάντων ἔσχατος καί πάντων δοῦλος καί πάντων διάκονος. Ὁ γάρ ὑψῶν ἑαυτόν ταπεινωθήσεται, ὁ δέ ταπεινῶν ἑαυτόν ὑψωθήσεται".

Ταῦτα πάντα καί τά τούτοις ὅμοια ὁ ἀδιαλείπτως ἐν διανοίᾳ κρατῶν καί ἐν αὐτοῖς νυκτός καί ἡμέρας ἐνασχολούμενος, νοερῶς τε καί αἰσθητῶς ταῦτα λογιζόμενος καί σπουδῇ ἐργαζόμενος, χωρίζεται τῆς μνήμης κατ᾿ ὀλίγον τοῦ κόσμου, τῶν πραγμάτων τοῦ βίου, τῶν χρημάτων, τῶν συγγενῶν καί ἰδίων, καί τοῖς πνευματικοῖς ἀναλόγως συγγίνεται. Οὕτω δέ καθ᾿ ἡμέραν προκόπτων, ἐπαισθάνεται πῶς κατά μικρόν ὑποχωροῦσιν οἱ λογισμοί τῶν προλήψεων, εἶτα πῶς καί αἱ προλήψεις αὗται μειοῦνται, καί μαλασσομένη ἡ καρδία πρός ταπείνωσιν ἔρχεται· πῶς τε πάλιν αὕτη λογισμούς ταπεινοφροσύνην ἐμποιοῦντας ἀπογεννᾷ. Οὕτω δέ τούτων ἐπαισθανόμενος, μόλις διά πάντων πρός κατάνυξιν καί δάκρυα ἔρχεται. Ἔρχεται δ᾿ οὖν ὅμως διά πολλῶν θλίψεων, καί πλέον ταπεινουμένη περισσότερον κατανύσσεται. Ἡ μέν γάρ ταπείνωσις τό πένθος ἀπογεννᾷ, τό δέ πένθος ἐκτρέφει τήν γεννήσασαν καί αὐξάνειν ποιεῖ. Αὕτη δέ ἡ ἐργασία δά τῆς ἐκπληρώσεως ἐπιτελουμένη τῶν ἐντολῶν ἐκπλύνει μέν ὤ τοῦ θαύματος! - πάντα ῥύπον ἀπό τῆς ψυχῆς, ἀπελαύνει δέ πᾶν πάθος καί πᾶσαν ἐπιθυμίαν κακήν - σωματικήν τε λέγω καί βιωτικήν. (219) Καί οὕτω γίνεται ἐλεύθερος τῇ ψυχῇ ἀπό πάσης γηΐνης ἐπιθυμίας ὁ ἄνθρωπος· οὐ μόνον δεσμῶν σωματικῶν, ἀλλά γάρ ὡς ὅταν ἱμάτιόν τις ἀποδύσηται καί γυμνός ὅλος γένηται. Καί εἰκότως· ἀποδύεται γάρ ἡ ψυχή πρῶτον μέν τήν ἀναισθησίαν, ἥν ὁ θεῖος ἀπόστολος κάλυμμα λέγει, ἥτις ἐν ταῖς τῶν ἀπίστων Ἰουδαίων κεῖται καρδίαις, οὐ μήν ἀλλά γάρ καί νῦν πᾶς ὁ τάς ἐντολάς τῆς νέας χάριτος μή πάσῃ δυνάμει καί ζεούσῃ καρδίᾳ ποιῶν, τό τοιοῦτον κάλυμμα ἔχει ἐπικείμενον τῷ νοερῷ τῆς ψυχῆς αὐτοῦ καί εἰς τό ὕψος τῆς ἐπιγνώσεως τοῦ Υἱοῦ τοῦ Θεοῦ ἀνενεχθῆναι οὐ δύναται. Εἶτα ὥσπερ ὁ ἀποδυσάμενος σωματικῶς τά ἐν τῷ σώματι αὐτοῦ τραύματα καθορᾷ, οὕτω δή καί οὗτος τά ἐν τῇ ψυχῇ αὐτοῦ προσόντα πάθη τηνικαῦτα βλέπει τρανῶς, οἷον φιλοδοξίαν, φιλαργυρίαν, μνησικακίαν, μισαδελφίαν, φθόνον, ζῆλον, ἔριν, οἴησιν καί τά λοιπά καθεξῆς. Τάς γοῦν ἐντολάς ὡς φάρμακα, τούς δέ πειρασμούς ὡς καυτῆρας ἐν τούτοις ἐπιτιθείς, καί ταπεινούμενος καί πενθῶν καί τήν τοῦ Θεοῦ βοήθειν θερμῶς ἐκζητῶν, ὁρᾷ ἐναργῶς τήν χάριν τοῦ Ἁγίου Πνεύματος παραγενομένην καί ἕν καθ᾿ ἕν τούτων
