him. 14.13 For after the vision of the angels, Jesus himself, the angel, came, and the gospel says: and behold, Jesus met them, saying: rejoice. And they, coming forward, took hold of his feet. They took hold of him, so that what was written might be fulfilled: "I will hold him and I will not let him go." The woman's body was weak, but her spirit was courageous. Much water did not quench love, nor did rivers overwhelm it. The one sought was dead, but the hope of the resurrection was not extinguished. And the angel says to them again: do not be afraid. I do not say to the soldiers "do not be afraid," but to you. Let them be afraid, so that having learned by experience they might bear witness and say: "truly he was the Son of God." But you must not be afraid. For perfect love casts out fear. Go and tell his disciples that he is risen, and so on. And they departed with joy and fear. Has this also been written? The second psalm, therefore, which speaks of the passion of Christ, says: serve the Lord with fear and rejoice in him with trembling. Rejoice because of the risen Lord, but with trembling because of the earthquake and the angel who appeared like lightning. 14.14 The chief priests and Pharisees, therefore, sealed the tomb through Pilate, but the women saw the risen one. And Isaiah, knowing the worthlessness of the chief priests and the firmness of the women's faith, says: "Women coming from the sight, come hither, for it is a people that has no understanding." The chief priests are without understanding, and the women are eyewitnesses. And when the soldiers came to them in the city and reported what had happened, they said to them: "Say that his disciples came by night and stole him while we were asleep." Well, therefore, did Isaiah foretell this also as if from them: "But speak to us and report to us another deceit." The risen one has been raised, and for a gift of silver they persuade the soldiers. But they do not persuade the kings of today. The soldiers of that time betrayed the truth for silver, but the kings of today, through piety, have fashioned this holy church of the resurrection of God the Savior, in which we are present, adorned with silver and inlaid with gold, and have made it resplendent with treasures of silver and gold and precious stones. "And if this is heard by the governor, we will persuade him." And if you persuade them, you do not persuade the world. For why, just as when Peter came out of the prison the guards are condemned, were those who were guarding Jesus Christ not condemned? But condemnation from Herod came upon them, for they could not make a defense out of ignorance; but these, having seen the truth and hiding it for silver, were saved by the chief priests. But few of the Jews were persuaded then, but the world has obeyed. Those who hid the truth were hidden away, and those who received it were revealed by the power of the Savior who not only rose from the dead, but also raised the dead with himself. On whose behalf the prophet Hosea clearly says: "He will heal us after two days; on the third day we shall be raised up, and we shall live in his sight." 14.15 Since the divine scriptures do not persuade the disobedient Jews, and forgetting all that is written they speak against the resurrection of Jesus, it would be good to speak against them in this way. By what logic, while saying that Elisha and Elijah have raised the dead, do you speak against the resurrection of our Savior? Is it because we do not now have living witnesses from that time for the things that are said? Therefore, you too should present witnesses of what happened then. But that is written. And this is written. Why then do you accept the one, but reject the other? Hebrews wrote those things. And all the apostles are Hebrews. Why then do you disbelieve the Jews? Matthew, who wrote the Gospel, wrote it in the Hebrew language, and Paul the herald, a Hebrew of Hebrews, and the twelve apostles from the Hebrews. Then fifteen bishops of Jerusalem were established in succession from the Hebrews. By what
