they read a document. 4.17.10 For indeed it also seemed absurd to them for it to be prefaced that it was set forth in 4.17.10 Sirmium in the presence of Constantius the eternal Augustus, during the consulate of Eusebius and Hypatius, just as Athanasius somewhere, writing to his friends, says that it is ridiculous to call Constantius the eternal emperor, but to refuse to say that the Son of God is eternal, and to prefix a specified date to this document for the slander of the faith of the ancients and of those initiated before this time. 4.17.11 But when these things took place in Ariminum, those around Valens and Ursacius, being vexed at their deposition, came in haste to the emperor. 4.18.1 But the synod, putting forward twenty bishops, sent them as envoys; and through them it wrote the following, translated from the Roman tongue: 4.18.2 “We believe what has been determined to have come about by the command of God and the order of your piety; for we, all the bishops, have assembled together in Ariminum from all the cities of the West, so that the faith of the catholic church might be made known and those who think the opposite might be made manifest. Whose faith God has transmitted also into the times of your reign through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom it has been granted to you to reign so as also to have dominion over our world. 4.18.7 Again, therefore, the pitiable and wretched men in their thinking, with the unlawful daring of their impious sentiment, have announced themselves as heralds and 4.18.8 are attempting to overthrow every ordinance of truth.
