Poverty overtook me, and without a physical muzzle, being pressed by pains, I am not able to speak; and at other times, with a crowd standing around, I am forced to cry out. These things are accustomed to happen to those in pain, both for the voice to be restrained by anguish and again to cry aloud when pricked by pains. But "I stand in the assembly crying out" can be understood according to what was said by the apostle, that: "We have become a spectacle to the world and to angels and to men." 30, 29 I have become a brother to sirens, and a companion to sparrows. Symmachus has rendered it _o_s_t_r_i_c_h_e_s. By sirens he means either songbirds or man-shaped demons.
