each one the passions of shame, being uncovered before all creation. And the lofty eyes (he says) will be brought low. As many as, having raised their own mind on high, saw the one who showed all these things, these, having lofty eyes, by leading their mind above all bodies; then through false opinion and much passion for material things, they could no longer bear to contemplate great things, but becoming wholly given to bodily pleasure, are rightly said to be brought low. 5.168 And the Lord Sabaoth will be exalted in judgment. That is, according to the just retribution upon the aforementioned, the Lord God is exalted in judgment, as one of the things contributing to the glory of God is also the judgment upon the impious which comes from the judge according to the worth of their works; so that also in the judgment is contemplated the height of the wisdom and of the power of the Lord. For just as those who contemplate the wisdom of the arrangement of the heavenly bodies (according to the position and motion and relation which the stars have to one another) understand the majesty of his wisdom (so as to be able to say that, Of his wisdom there is no number), so those who see the reasons of judgment will no less marvel at the wise and intelligent aspect in the judgment, and, down to the smallest details, its rendering to each according to their worth. Perhaps, then, by each good deed we exalt God, so that he is exalted in our temperance and he is exalted in our righteousness. But since these things are achieved through the cooperation of God, when, having taken us up, he sets us upright, supporting us with the cooperation from himself, and strengthening us, then we say: I will exalt you, O Lord, because you have taken me up. But the exaltations of God are many: both according to knowledge and understanding; and according to the exposition of his majesties and according to the contemplation of his judgments. Wherefore it is said of the righteous man, that The exaltations of God are in his throat. Then, since vigor in action is joined with correctness in contemplation, And two-edged swords (he says) are in their hands, that is, words cutting out and uprooting the passions of the soul. And since the Lord Sabaoth is called the Lord of hosts, then the hosts, who minister to him at the time of judgment, will exalt and glorify him for the just and incalculable judgment. And we suppose something of this kind, that when the Lord is judged with men (For the Lord himself will come into judgment with the people), the Lord alone will be exalted, no one being justified before him. For who, being examined together with the benefactions from him who created us and the many various dispensations which reach in common to the whole race of men, will be able to give back things equal and worthy of what has come to him from the gift of the Lord? Wherefore the Saints are at a loss, saying, What shall I render to the Lord for all that he has rendered to me? 5.169 And God the holy one will be glorified in righteousness. It follows upon being exalted in judgment that the Holy One is glorified in righteousness. Those who have contemplated him being exalted in his judgments, these comprehend the glory of his righteousness. And the plundered shall be fed like bulls, and lambs shall eat the deserted places of those who have been carried off. The people who become captive for not knowing the Lord and for sinning in drunkenness, will be fed in the manner of a herd of cattle. And these same are the ones who were plundered, at the time of their being taken captive. And it is clear that, whenever we are defeated in the war by opposing energies, being taken captive by them, we are plundered like spoils after the victory. And being plundered, we no longer take the things proper to rational beings for our own food, but being carried along by irrational movements (as it may happen), we will live in the manner of bulls in the wilderness of this life. And for this reason he did not say of oxen, but of bulls; because oxen herd together with one another, but bulls, because of their spirited nature, are wrathful toward one another,
