and when discoursing with the Sadducees about the resurrection, the Lord says thus: "For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as the angels of God in heaven." This is the purpose of the writing of the blessed evangelist Matthew. Paragraph 5.195 And he is a herald not of the Old but of the New Testament, who wrote for us how and when and from whom the founder of the second state was born, that is, the Lord Christ, and how he lived and was killed and rose again and ascended into heaven, where the commonwealth of the second state is. Glory to God who from the beginning prepared and foretold these things and now has fulfilled and is fulfilling them. Amen. 5.198 This is Luke, the third of the evangelists, who, having observed many attempting to write Gospels and fabricating many things from their hearts, himself quickly writes an account to his own disciple Theophilus, securing him lest he be carried away by their fabrications, nor be diverted from what he had formerly learned: "that you might know," he says, "with certainty the truth concerning the things you were taught." He narrates to him, therefore, the very things he had delivered to him, beginning from the birth of John, teaching this, that the birth of the Forerunner was also wondrous, then having narrated that the birth according to the flesh of the Lord Christ himself also came to be wondrously, having spoken of his forefathers in reverse order according to the purpose of the preceding Matthew, as being from David and Abraham, and further extending it, as he is also from Adam, and finding no one later, he finally traced back to God, saying "of God," that is, of the one who began creation according to the hierophant Moses and made the first-formed Adam. 5.199 Then again he also, having said similar things to the others concerning the baptism and the temptations, and also the death and the resurrection, after these things both in the Gospel itself and in the Acts reports his ascent into heaven, and that he will come again in this way, and he too completes his own writing looking to one purpose, which all await, teaching this also to his own disciple, the God-loving Theophilus. Paragraph 5.200 And he, being a herald of the same New Testament, declared the same things as the others, beginning from the birth of the Forerunner, coming also to his own birth, and speaking of the life according to the law, likewise also the evangelical life, I mean baptism, death and resurrection; and at last he also announced the ascent into heaven, where the dwelling-place of our second state is.
