of the highest authority, to enslave the enemies of his own word; for he wishes it to advance daily and to increase among all men. 3.7.36 And again, lest it should be thought to endure by the permission of the rulers; if ever one of these, seized by wickedness, proposed to make war on the word of Christ, he also permitted him to do what he desired, both for the demonstration of the athletes of piety, and also that it might be made clear to all, that the establishment of the word was not from the counsel of men but from the power of God. 3.7.37 Immediately, who would not marvel at the things accustomed to happen at such times? For the athletes of piety, previously... to all men, became manifest and distinguished, having been deemed worthy of the prizes from God; but the enemies of piety paid the fitting penalties, being driven mad by divinely sent scourges and all their body being destroyed by terrible and grievous sufferings, so that they were driven to come to a confession of their impiety against Christ. 3.7.38 But all the rest, who were deemed worthy of the divine name and boasted of thinking the things of Christ, having exercised for a short time in the trials, and having shown the genuine and sincere quality of their mind, they again received their own freedom, as the saving word shone forth more greatly daily through them, and prevailed even in the very midst of its enemies, 3.7.39 rising up against not only visible enemies, but also invisible ones, if there were any wicked demons and rulers of them in the gloomy air around the earth; whom the genuine disciples of Christ, through a pure life and prayers to God and through his divine name, were driving out, ... of the wonderful signs recorded of old to have been done by him, and in this showing to those able to perceive them the proofs of his divine virtue. 3.7.40 But since these things have been previously exercised in due season, the time now calls to take up the more mystical theology concerning him, and to contemplate God the Word, whoever he was who performed the miracles through the visible man. 4.Pin.t These things are in the fourth book of the Evangelical Demonstration concerning our Savior. 4.Pin.1 1.
