they entrusted; Of this Linus Paul makes mention in his epistles to Timothy. Anencletus succeeded him, 5.6.2 and after him, in the third place from the apostles, Clement received the episcopate, who had both seen the blessed apostles and had conversed with them and still had the preaching of the apostles ringing in his ears and their tradition before his eyes, not he alone; for there were yet many then left alive who had been taught by the apostles. 5.6.3 Therefore in the time of this Clement, when no small dissension had arisen among the brethren at Corinth, the church in Rome sent a most powerful letter to the Corinthians, urging them to peace and renewing their faith and the tradition which it had lately received from the apostles.” And after a little he says: 5.6.4 “This Clement was succeeded by Evarestus, and Evarestus by Alexander, then Sixtus was appointed, the sixth from the apostles, and after him Telesphorus, who also suffered a glorious martyrdom; then Hyginus, then Pius, after whom Anicetus. Soter having succeeded Anicetus, Eleutherus now, in the twelfth place from the apostles, holds the lot of the episcopate. 5.6.5 By this same order 5.6.5 and by this same teaching the tradition from the apostles in the Church and the preaching of the truth have come down to us.” 5.7.1 Irenaeus wrote these things in conformity with the histories we have already recounted, in the works which he entitled, being five in number, *Refutation and Overthrow of the Falsely-named Knowledge*, in the second book of the same treatise, where he indicates that even down to his time examples of divine and miraculous power had remained in some churches, he points it out through these words, saying: 5.7.2 “So far are they from raising the dead, as the Lord raised them, and the apostles by prayer. And in the brotherhood, frequently through necessity, when the whole church of the place besought it with much fasting and supplication, the spirit of the dead man returned, and the man was granted to the prayers of the saints.” And again he says after other things: 5.7.3 “But if they also say that the Lord performed such things in appearance, leading them to the prophetic writings, from them we shall show that all things were so foretold concerning him, and were surely accomplished, and that he alone is the Son of God; wherefore also in his name those who are truly his disciples, having received grace from him, perform them for the benefit of the rest of mankind, according as each has received the gift from him. 5.7.4 For some surely and truly cast out demons, so that often those very persons who have been cleansed from the evil spirits believe and are in the Church; and others have foreknowledge of things to come, and visions and prophetic utterances; others heal the sick by the laying on of hands and restore them to health; and moreover, as we have said, even the dead have been raised up and remained with us for many years. And what more? 5.7.5 It is not possible to name the number of the gifts which the Church throughout the whole world, having received them from God, in the name of Jesus Christ who was crucified under Pontius Pilate, performs each day for the benefit of the Gentiles, neither deceiving any nor making money from them; for as she has received freely from God, she also ministers freely.” 5.7.6 And in another place the same author writes: “Just as we also hear of many brethren in the Church who possess prophetic gifts, and who through the Spirit speak all kinds of languages, and bring to light for the general good the hidden things of men, and declare the mysteries of God.” These things also concerning the diverse gifts remaining among the worthy even until the times indicated. 5.8.1 But since at the beginning of our work we made a promise to set forth in due course the statements of the ancient ecclesiastical presbyters and writers, in which they have handed down the traditions that have come to them concerning the canonical Scriptures
