Reveal your way to the Lord, etc. “Everyone who does evil hates the light, and does not come to the light,” he does not reveal his way to the Lord. First “hope in the Lord, and do good,” and so on; having done these things, again “hope in him, and he will do it.” But God, who sees righteousness in secret, because he sees in secret, will bring it forth, when he reveals the counsels; and he who shines in the judgment will have his judgment as the noonday. Be subject to the Lord and beseech him, etc. This subjection is the voluntary consent of a rational nature to the knowledge of God. “Do not be envious of the one who prospers in his way, of the man who does iniquities.” Now he calls progress for the worse prosperity; as also, “But evil men and impostors will proceed for the worse.” Cease from anger and forsake wrath, 12.1317 etc. Wrath is the anger of a desire of a gentle soul, especially for vengeance; anger is a desire for punishment; and punishment is the recompense of evil. “Do not be envious so as to do evil.” Do not see their prosperity, but await the end, and you will see their destruction. For those who do evil will be utterly destroyed, etc. To be utterly destroyed is nothing other than to fall away from God. And yet a little while, and the sinner will not be, etc. The saying is ambiguous; for either the sinner will be non-existent (which those who say the wicked are completely destroyed think, not soundly;) or, insofar as he is a sinner, he will not exist. And you will seek his place, and you will not find it, etc. The place of a sinner is wickedness. But the meek will inherit the earth, etc. The earth now signifies knowledge; for the mind is said to be in contemplation as in a place. “And they will delight in the abundance of peace.” The delight of the righteous is abundance of peace, and abundance of peace is passionlessness of soul with true knowledge of things that are. A little is better for the righteous than the great wealth of sinners, etc. A little spiritual knowledge is better than a multitude of the wisdom of the nations. But the Lord supports the righteous, etc. Nothing so supports the righteous as a spiritual gift; “that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to strengthen you,” says the Apostle. The Lord knows the ways of the blameless, etc. Another: “The Lord foreknows the days of the blameless.” He not only supports their life, but also knows the future days, and the prepared inheritance. Therefore, to be grieved for a short time will not harm them; for they are trained by endurance, traveling the narrow and afflicted way, not being ashamed in an evil time, when he brings wrath upon sinners. But even now some will perish for lack of rational food, but those of God will delight to fullness. And their inheritance will be forever, etc. The inheritance of the rational nature is the knowledge of God. They will not be put to shame in an evil time, etc. He calls the time of judgment an evil time. “And in days of famine they will be satisfied.” He names days of famine those in which many of the unclean are deprived of the bread who said: “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” Failing, they failed like smoke, etc. This smoke is driven away from the rational wood by the fire which Christ came to cast upon the earth. 12.1320 Of the same. But smoke is a sign of an extinguished fire. And these too, having burned like a fire, were extinguished. Such are those who have shone against us. Sinners perish, not by the entire dissolution of their substance, but by no longer being sinners. 12.1368 PSALM 37. Lord, do not rebuke me in your wrath, nor discipline me in your anger, etc. He who does not yield to rebuke through reason will be rebuked by the wrath of God; and he who does not come under the yoke of a teacher who disciplines in God will be disciplined by the anger of God; but discipline is more painful than rebuke. Like a heavy burden they have been heavy upon me, etc. “Come,” says Christ, “all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” I was troubled and bowed down to the end; all the day long
