to God and on earth peace, good will among men," their ancient sadness, on account of the first-formed man, now putting it aside and rejoicing at the birth of the second Adam. 5.202 This is John, the fourth of the evangelists, the one loved more than all by Christ, the one who reclined upon the Lord’s breast, the one who drew up the mysteries from there as from an ever-flowing spring, to whom, while he was living in Ephesus, were given the writings of the other three evangelists by the faithful, and having received them, he declared that they were well done, but said that some things had been omitted in them, which it was also necessary to narrate; and having been urged by the faithful, he also set forth his own writing, in a way, a fulfillment of the things omitted, such as concerning the wedding in Cana, concerning Nicodemus, concerning the Samaritan woman, concerning the royal official, concerning the man blind from birth, concerning Lazarus, concerning Judas being indignant on account of the woman who anointed the Lord with myrrh, concerning the Greeks who approached, concerning the washing of the feet, and concerning other teachings spoken in between, concerning the Paraclete, and especially also concerning the divinity of Christ, openly proclaiming it and setting it forth as the foundation of his own writing, all of which had been omitted by the others. 5.203 Beginning, therefore, from his divinity, he moved straightway also to his humanity, saying himself as much as had been said before by the others: baptism, temptations, death and resurrection. Then he adds what he did after the resurrection, how he entered when the doors were closed, how he showed his hands and his feet and his side, how he ate and drank with them, how he journeyed with them, how he kept their eyes from seeing him, how, when he wished, he suddenly appeared and suddenly again departed, how he said to Mary in a teaching manner: “Do not touch me,” teaching through this that the way of life of immortals is not fitting with mortals, but rather their way of life is in heaven. 5.204 For thus he also adds: “For I have not yet ascended to my Father,” where I am about to go up, where the way of life of the immortals also is. For this reason he also told her to go and tell the disciples that: I am ascending into heaven, where you also are about to go up. Having written all these things, he also completed his own writing, having one purpose with the other evangelists, to teach that from this state one must look to the future state, toward which all the divinely inspired Scripture looks, both the Old and the New Testament. Marginal note 5.205 And he, having appeared as a herald of the New Testament, having written the things omitted by the other evangelists and having filled in the rest, likewise declared to the others, baptism, way of life, death and resurrection and ascension into heaven, where the dwelling place of immortal and just men and of angels is, that is, the place of the second state. Glory to the one who prepared and foretold these things and is still fulfilling them. Amen. 5.206 This is Peter, the chief of the apostles, the one entrusted with the keys of the kingdom of the 20heavens20, the one having the Church founded upon himself, the one who denied three times and confessed three times, the one who nobly asked to endure the cross upside down, and he, preserving the same purpose as the evangelists, thus spoke in the Acts: “Jesus of Nazareth, a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did through him in your midst, as you yourselves know— this Jesus, delivered up according to the definite plan and foreknowledge of God, you crucified and killed by the hands of lawless men. But God raised him up, having loosed the pangs of death,” then further down: “This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses. Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing. Ταῦτα πάντα συγγραψάμενος καὶ αὐτὸς ἐτέλεσε τὴν ἑαυτοῦ γραφήν, ἕνα σκοπὸν ἔχων σὺν τοῖς ἄλλοις εὐαγγελισταῖς τοῦ διδάξαι ὅτι ἐκ ταύτης τῆς καταστάσεως ἐπὶ τὴν μέλλουσαν δεῖ ἀφορᾶν, πρὸς ἣν ἀφορᾷ πᾶσα ἡ θεόπνευστος Γραφή, Παλαιά τε καὶ Καινὴ ∆ιαθήκη.
