to him upon the bed of his pain and will turn all his bed in his sickness, releasing him from human sickness and granting to him the health of the soul, so that if some sickness should also happen to him according to the soul (such as many happen to be, just as the apostle teaches, saying: For this reason many among you are weak and sick) he also transforms this sickness. And the Lord will provide all the remaining things to the one who has understanding for the poor and needy. 417 Ps 40,5b From these things we learn that sin is a sickness and a wound of the soul. 418 Ps 40,7-9 They interpret these verses about Judas. for he was already outside the Savior and the company of the apostles. Judas, after he purposed to betray the teacher, entering in pretense as if he were still an apostle, spoke in vain "Rabbi," and addressing Jesus as teacher, while his heart gathered lawlessness to itself. For when the devil had put love of money into his heart, he also added both the betrayal of Jesus and hanging himself. And he, going forth, that is, being outside of the discipleship of Jesus, spoke together with the Pharisees against the Savior. And since they secretly agreed about the giving of the thirty pieces of silver, all his enemies whispered against him; for whispering is a sound without boldness. Therefore, these very ones who purposed to whisper against Jesus devised a lawless word against him; for to buy and sell innocent blood is the work of a lawless pact. But to these working in vain he said, "Why do you strive in vain? Or do you think that the one whom you surround with death does not rise again? Know that he who sleeps will rise again besides. For resurrection is an addition that abolishes death. 419 Ps 40,10 It is no wonder, the Savior will say, if my enemies devised such things against me; for even the man of peace, who was at peace with me and zealous for peace on my behalf, in whom it was natural to trust, having hoped in him, comes together with those against me. For being one who shared my table and partaking of the same salt, or rather, eating my bread, he lifted his heel against me in a hostile manner, saying deceitfully, "Hail Rabbi," and whatever else he said craftily. Clearly, therefore, he speaks here about Judas, having spoken about him covertly in the preceding parts. 420 Ps 40,11 By bringing in for me another people in place of the one cast out and Matthias in place of Judas; but also, "Raise me up, that I may repay them," the repayment being for their good. 421 Ps 40,14 He is blessed (Εὐλογημένος) when there are those who bless, but blessed (εὐλογητὸς) means worthy of being blessed eternally. And since the God of Israel is blessed, he adds the prayer, "Let it be, let it be," not that the prayer makes God blessed, just as the prayer of those who say, "Hallowed be thy name," does not hallow the name of God. But these things have been said in the preceding sections.
422 Ps 41,1 And there were three sons of Korah appointed with others to sing
the divine psalms, whom scripture also calls singers, whose names are also found in Chronicles. Therefore, these three, being perfected in the same mind and the same judgment, united in being in accord concerning all things, utter all things in the present psalm as one. 423 Ps 41,2a The deer, the animal which is hostile toward snakes and eats them, if ever, after eating, it should be inflamed by thirst which arises from the venom of the serpents it ate, it seeks with haste springs of water in order to cure its thirst. But there are those who say that, also wishing to see its reflection in the waters, it tracks the springs, so that it may see the defilement upon itself from the blood of the snakes, in order that it may wash it off; for while tearing the snakes apart, they, shaking themselves, sprinkle their own blood upon it. And the
