could ever have happened, but being a sorcerer, he deceived the maiden by bribing her with 105.8 gold. And with Leda, he becomes a swan again, signifying the taking wing of the fire of his 105.9 pleasure. And becoming an eagle, never having flown, he sets himself forth as a teacher of corrupters of boys; never having become an eagle, but in a ship with a figurehead, named Eagle because of its speed, he sailed past Troy and, seizing Ganymede the son of the king of the Trojans, 105.10 he accomplished the corruption. And with Pasiphae he became a bull, and likewise with Europa. 106.1 And why should I recount the multitude of corruptions of this noble corrupter of virgins and teacher of corrupters? His tomb is known to not a few. For on the island of Crete, on the mountain 106.2 called Lasius, it is pointed out to this day. And there were not one or two Zeuses, but three and four in number. For one of them was the aforementioned son of Cronus, who cast his own father into Tartarus on Mount Caucasus; and another was called Latiarius, from whom the gladiators came into being; and another was the tragic one, who also burned 106.3 his hand. And Dionysoi also: the Theban, another the son of Semele, the one of the Corybantes and the one torn apart by the Titans 106.6 and the one of the Curetes who initiated into the distribution of flesh. And Heracles, called by them the averter of evil, all of whose deeds I will pass over in silence, but I will point out one from among them all which is perhaps praised by them: it will suffice for him to undergo this labor, that salvation might come to the world. For if he had not corrupted fifty 106.7 virgins in one night, how was the world to be saved? Rather, it would have been destroyed. And simply I confess to you, I shrink from writing down their evil deeds in a list. 106.8 Moreover, most cruel kings and tyrants, having had certain beloved ones and having buried them in the earth, having nothing more to grant them since they themselves were corruptible like them, for their goodwill have handed over their tombs to be worshipped as gods by their own subjects for the deception of the world under an evil pretext, 106.9 such as Antinous, who was buried in Antinoöpolis, and lying in a pleasure-boat was so established by Hadrian. And Timogenes in Asia, and Canopus the pilot of Menelaus and his wife Enmenouthis, buried in Alexandria, are honored on the shore of the sea, twelve stades distant, and Marnas the slave of Asterius the Cretan among the Gazaeans, and Casius the ship-owner among the Pelusiotes. 107.1 When, therefore, you carefully examine all these things in the midst of the church, a bad † example of a deadly path * you release * those who were so brought forward, and others you bring from adultery to self-control and not only do you deliver them from secret marriage, but also to * despise their own wife in self-control, since “the time is short,” as the holy apostle says, and you instruct fornicators, so that they may not be punished for having committed an unlawful deed before God and men. 107.2 And when, laboring through word and through deeds, you hand over all these things, you persuade them to accept everything from you, having first done all things in deed and having formed them in yourselves, the words
