Therefore let all the house of Israel know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified." 5.207 It must be considered here how he has summarized the entire subject matter of the evangelists in very few lines, speaking of him and his upbringing as from Nazareth, and that he happens to be a man from God, as a second Adam, and that through him God performed miracles, and that by divine permission he was killed by the lawless, and that God raised him immortal and immutable—for this is what he said, "having loosed the pangs of death"—and that having been exalted by the divine power he ascended into heaven and from there sent down the Holy Spirit; for no one else ascended into heaven, not David, but the Lord himself, about whom David also said: "The Lord said to my Lord: Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet," and: "For certain God has made him both Lord and Christ." 5.208 And again he speaks to Cornelius thus: "Jesus of Nazareth, how God anointed him with the Holy Spirit and with power, how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him; and we are witnesses of all that he did both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem; whom they also killed by hanging him on a tree. This man God raised on the third day and made him to appear, not to all the people, but to witnesses preordained by God, to us, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead; and he commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one appointed by God to be judge of the living and the dead. To him all the prophets bear witness that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name." 5.209 Likewise again, when he healed the lame man, he says thus: "Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out, that times of refreshing may come, and that he may send the Christ appointed for you, Jesus, whom heaven must receive until the time for restoring all the things about which God spoke by the mouth of all his holy prophets from of old." And he remembers the saying of Moses, the one: "The Lord God will raise up for you a prophet", and again he adds: "And all the prophets, from Samuel and those who came after him, as many as have spoken, also proclaimed these days. You are the sons of the prophets and of the covenant that God made with your fathers, saying to Abraham: And in your seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed. To you first God, having raised up his servant, sent him to bless you, in turning every one of you from your wickedness." 5.210 To all these things the blessed Peter also testifies, just as the evangelists do, and that all the prophets foretold all these things, that God has made and is making a certain second, new state of things, which he also foretold through the mouth of all the prophets, and he neither said there was another before this state of things, nor did he declare another after the one to come, but along with all the prophets and apostles he spoke of only two, this one and the one to come. Marginal note 5.211 At the building of the tower, men once fighting against God wished to ascend into heaven; God, having divided their tongues, made them ineffective. In the last times, having come for the salvation of men and having led our nature up to heaven, on the day of Pentecost, signifying also the ascent of the rest, through the Holy Spirit from heaven he again gathered the tongues and gives them to the apostles. 5.212 And Peter, the great herald of this New Covenant, standing and speaking publicly in their midst, and carrying the keys of heaven which were entrusted to him by Christ, cried out with boldness what the evangelists also wrote: baptism, way of life, death, resurrection,
