you will be sent away. Run, seek, knock, so that the gate of the kingdom of heaven may be opened to you and you may be within it and possess it within yourselves. For those who depart from this life before possessing it, where ever will they find it when they have gone there? Here, then, we were commanded to ask and seek and knock in repentance and tears, and to those who do so the Master promised to give it to us. If therefore we are not willing to do this and to obey the Master Christ, so that while still remaining in this life we might hasten to receive the kingdom within us, will we not, when we have gone there, justly hear Him saying to us: "What do you seek now, which you refused to receive from me when it was being given to you? Though I often exhorted you to labor and receive it from me, did you not refuse, but you despised it and preferred the enjoyment of corruptible and earthly things? By what works or words, then, will you be able to find it from this point on?"
For this reason, then, fathers and brothers, I beseech you, let us keep the commandments of our God with all zeal, so that we may attain both eternal life and the kingdom and that we may not hear now: "He who disobeys the Son shall not see life, but the wrath (230) of God will remain upon him," and in the age to come: "Depart from me, I do not know you, where you are from," but that we may hear that blessed voice saying, "Come, you who are blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you, because you fed me, who was hungry for your salvation, through the keeping of my commandments, you gave me drink, you clothed me, you gathered me and came to me, having cleansed your hearts from every stain and filth of sin; therefore, enjoy my good things, the enjoyment of which is ineffable and life eternal and immortal" –, may it be granted to all of us to attain this by the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever. Amen.
Concerning the energies of the Holy Spirit. And what is the contemplation of the mysteries
of it. And how they are revealed to the pure in heart. And a beneficial narrative from the outset concerning a certain subordinate, who received the Holy Spirit through the prayers of his spiritual father.
Discourse 16. (231) Brothers and fathers and children, a certain younger man narrated to me, saying that:
Being a subordinate of a venerable father, equal in rank to the great and lofty saints, hearing often from him about the divine illuminations from heaven that occur in those who struggle, and the abundance of light and the conversation of God through him with men, I was amazed. And I had—he says—such a desire and love for such a good thing, that in the thought of it I would forget all earthly and heavenly things, and not only that but also all food and drink and every bodily comfort. But this saint among saints, being great and adorned with the charismatic gift of foresight, seeing me unhesitatingly fulfilling only the things commanded me by him and neither eating nor drinking, but being pensive throughout and as if consumed by some poison, possessing measureless sympathy, (232) commanded me with a penance, and even though I did not want to, I would eat; for I feared—he says—the judgment of disobedience. As much food, therefore, as I partook of,
