of corporeal and incorporeal things. And now Moses transforms creation, now others other elements; but he commanded us to build ourselves as a temple for him. Therefore, even if you do not create a heaven, yet you do create a temple of God. For heaven is glorious for this reason, because it has God dwelling in it; or rather, through Christ, also us. For, he says, he raised us up together, and made us sit together at the right hand in the heavenly places; and he gave us to do greater things than he himself did. For the signs, he says, that I do, he will do also, and greater than these he will do. And in the Old Testament, one changed the sea, another reined in the sun, another commanded the moon to stay, another turned back its rays; the children in the furnace bound the energy of the element, and the raging flame fell silent, and being bound, it hissed. Even beasts know to reverence the friends of God; even if famine compels them, they become more philosophical. Let the gluttonous be ashamed of the continence of the beasts. Lions saw Daniel, and acted philosophically; we, seeing the Son of God coming to us, do not act philosophically. They chose to perish with hunger, and not to touch the holy body; we, seeing Christ wandering naked and wasting 55.149 away with hunger, do not even give away our surplus, but living in abundance, we neglect the saints. The earth again brought forth for another friend of God so many gifts from its own bosom, such an abundance as never before. And why do you wonder, if they themselves were venerable, when even their garments, and their shadows were terrible to demons, and to death, and to disease? And angels revered men, and honored them exceedingly. For how could they not, whom their Master honored? And in the Old and in the New this is to be seen. For this reason he says: According to your height, you have made much of the sons of men. Therefore, considering the greatness of the honor, let us offer a worthy return for it, so that the excess of honor may not become for us a provision for punishment; from which may we all be delivered, both those who teach these things and those who learn them, in Christ Jesus our Lord, to whom is due all glory, honor and worship for ever and ever. Amen. ON THE 8TH PSALM. For the end, for the winepresses. Another, A song of victory for the winepresses. Another, To the victor, for the Gittith. But the Hebrew, Lamenasseh, al hagethith. O Lord, our Lord, how wonderful is your name in all the earth! Another, How great is your name! 1. In the psalm before this he said: I will give praise to the Lord according to his righteousness, and I will sing to the name of the Lord most high; here he fulfills his promise, offering a hymn to him. And in that one, what is said is as from one person; for, O Lord my God, he says, in you I have hoped, save me. But here, as from many. For, O Lord, he says, our Lord, how wonderful is your name. But be silent, and listen with precision. For if in the theater, when satanic choirs are singing, there is much silence, so that one may receive those deadly songs; and this when the choir is composed of male mimes and dancers, with some profane citharist leading them, and the song is satanic and deadly, and a defiled and wicked demon is being sung to; here, where the choir is of holy men, and the choir-leader is the Prophet, and the song is not from satanic energy, but from spiritual grace. and the one being sung to, not a demon, but God; how is it not necessary
