the Danube river, which he called Dacia Ripensis. And during the reign of the same most divine Trajan, Antioch the Great near Daphne suffered its third disaster in the month of Apellaios, which is also December, on the 13th, on the first day of the week, after the cock-crow, in the year designated 164 according to the Antiochenes themselves, and two years after the arrival of the most divine emperor Trajan in the east. The Antiochenes who remained and survived then built a temple in Daphne, on which they inscribed, The saved erected this to Zeus the Savior. And on the same night when this great Antioch suffered, the island city of Rhodes, which is part of the Hexapolis, also suffered its second disaster by an act of God. And the same most pious Trajan built in Antioch the Great, beginning the first construction, the so-called Middle Gate near the temple of Ares, where the Parmenius torrent flows down, very near to what is now called the Macellum, carving above it a statue of a she-wolf nursing Romus and Remus, so that it might be known that the building is Roman, having sacrificed there a beautiful citizen virgin named Calliope for the ransom and purification of the city, performing a wedding ceremony for her. and immediately he erected the two great porticoes, and he built many other things in the same 276 city of Antioch, both a public bath and an aqueduct, diverting the water flowing from the springs of Daphne to the so-called Agriae, and giving his own name to both the public bath and the aqueduct. and he completed the theatre of the same Antioch, which was unfinished, setting up in it, above four columns in the middle of the nymphaeum of the proscenium, a gilded bronze statue of the maiden sacrificed by him, seated upon the Orontes river, representing the fortune of the same city, being crowned by kings Seleucus and Antiochus. And the same emperor Trajan was dwelling in the same city when the act of God occurred. And at that time, during his reign, Saint Ignatius, the bishop of the city of Antioch, was martyred; for Trajan was indignant with him because he reviled him. And he then arrested five Christian women of Antioch by name and examined them, saying, What is your hope, that you thus give yourselves over to death? And they answered, saying that when we are killed by you, we will rise again just as we are in body to eternal life. And he ordered them to be burned, and he mixed the dust of their bones with bronze and made the bronze into the basins for the hot room of the public bath he built. And when the public bath began to be used, if anyone bathed in that public bath, he would be overcome with dizziness, fall down, and be carried out. And when the emperor Trajan learned this, he changed those same basins and made others from 277 pure bronze, saying, I did well to mix the dust of their bodies with them and to contaminate the hot waters. And he said these things because the Christians were boasting and vexing the Greeks. And melting down the first basins, he made five bronze statues for the same women, saying, Behold, I have resurrected them as they said, and not their god. Which statues stand in that same public bath to this day. And he also made a furnace of fire, and he ordered any Christians who wished to throw themselves in willingly. And many threw themselves in and were martyred. And at that time Saint Drosine and many other virgins were martyred. And he built in Daphne a temple of Artemis in the middle of the grove. And the same emperor also created two provinces beyond the Danube river in the western regions. which he called Dacia Prima and Secunda. And immediately, being struck by a disease, he died, being 66 years old. And after the reign of Trajan, Aelius Hadrian became emperor during the consulship of Apronianus and Niger. And he reigned for 22 years and 5 months. he was of medium height, well-built, with a fair complexion, graying hair, handsome, with a thick beard, grey-eyed, calm, eloquent,
