having been driven away, he himself was eager to stir up again any sparks of this that might be hidden under ashes. And as for those who were inclined to learning (for these were few, and they stood only at the outer gates of Aristotelian studies), he did not cease urging them to learn, but he permitted the study of the divine books to take precedence over Greek education. 5.9.5 And finding Italos filling all things with disturbances and deceiving many, he entrusted his examination to the sebastokrator Isaac; and this man was most devoted to letters and magnificent in his undertakings. And he, finding the man to be so, publicly refuted him, having placed him in their midst, and then sent him to the church, according to the command of his brother and emperor. And since he was unable to conceal his own lack of education, there too he spewed out doctrines foreign to the church and did not cease mocking the leaders of the church in their midst and doing certain other things of an uneducated and barbaric character, while Eustratios Garidas was at that time president of the church; whom he kept occupied with the buildings of the great church, so that he might perhaps change him for the better. But he himself would almost sooner have partaken of that man’s wickedness than imparted better knowledge, as the saying goes, and Italos made Garidas entirely his own. 5.9.6 What then? The whole populace of Constantine’s city had moved together towards the church, seeking Italos. And perhaps he would have been thrown from a height into the middle of the church, if he had not secretly gone up to the roof of this divine sanctuary and hidden himself in some hole. And when the things wrongly taught by him were rumored among many of those around the palace, and not a few magnates had been corrupted by these corrupting doctrines, and the emperor's soul was greatly vexed by this, they summarized the doctrines wrongly taught by Italos into eleven chapters and sent them to the emperor. And the emperor ordered Italos to anathematize these very chapters from the ambo in the great church with his head uncovered, while the whole congregation listened and added the anathema to them. 5.9.7 So when these things happened, and Italos was irrepressible and again said such things openly among many people, and when admonished by the emperor would blurt out something disorderly and barbaric, he himself was also anathematized, although later when he repented his anathema also became more moderate. And so the doctrines from then on are anathematized, but his name is brought under the ecclesiastical anathema somehow indirectly and covertly and not even recognizably to the many. For he in later times had changed regarding doctrine and had repented of the things in which he once had erred. And he denied metempsychosis and the insulting of the holy icons of the saints, and he strove to reinterpret somehow the doctrine concerning the Ideas toward orthodoxy, and he was clearly condemning himself for the things in which he had previously turned from the straight path.

6.1.1 While Bryennios, however, was holding Kastoria, as was said above, the emperor, eager to drive him from there and to seize Kastoria, again summoned the hoplite force and, having armed them all with weapons for siege warfare and for the encounters in wars abroad, took to the road leading to the fort. The position of the place is as follows. There is a certain lake of Kastoria, into which a neck of land enters from the mainland and around the end widens into
