Eleusius of Cyzicus said, “if Basil or Mark have done anything on their own account, or if they and the party of Acacius are privately bringing accusations against each other about certain things, it is of no concern to the synod, nor is it necessary to investigate whether the faith set forth by them is good or otherwise”; but that it was necessary to follow the one confirmed at Antioch by the ninety-seven more ancient priests; and if 4.22.23 anyone should introduce anything contrary to this, he is to be considered alien to piety and to the church. As all who were with him acclaimed these things, the meeting was then dissolved. But on the next day, the party of Acacius and 4.22.24 George could no longer be brought to assemble at the same place. Moreover, Leonas, though summoned, did not appear; for he now openly held their opinions. Indeed, those who went to him found the party of Acacius in his house. And when they begged and called him to the assembly, he did not obey, alleging that the synod was divided, although he had been commanded by the emperor to be present when all were consenting and assembling at the same place. 4.22.25 And since time was being spent, with the others repeatedly summoning the party of Acacius, while they, on the one hand, demanded that they should assemble for stated discussions in the house of Leonas, and on the other hand, claimed to have been commissioned by the emperor to judge the others, and were unwilling either to confess the same faith or to defend themselves concerning the charges, nor would they attend the examination concerning Cyril, whom they themselves had deposed, and since there was nothing pressing, they depose certain others, including George, the bishop of Alexandria, and Acacius of Caesarea, and Uranius of Tyre, and Patrophilus of Scythopolis, and Eu4.22.26doxius of Antioch. The majority they made excommunicate, until they should defend themselves against the charges brought against them, and they wrote what had been done to the diocese of each one. 4.22.27 Instead of Eudoxius they ordained Anianus bishop of Antioch, he being a presbyter of the clergy there. But the party of Acacius arrested him and delivered him to Leonas and Lauracius; they then held him under military guard, and later condemned him to exile beyond the borders. 4.22.28 This, in brief, was the end the synod at Seleucia had. But whoever desires to know the details accurately will learn them from the minutes of the proceedings on these matters, which the stenographers who were present recorded. 4.23.1 When these things had happened thus, the party of Acacius arrived with haste at the palace, but the others each withdrew to their own homes. But ten, who had been instructed by common consent to go to the emperor, found the ten sent from the assembly at Ariminum, and the party of Acacius already successful in persuading the powerful in the palace to think their thoughts and through these men having procured the favor of the em4.23.2peror. For, it was said, some were of the same opinion as they were, others had been corrupted by ecclesiastical properties, and others had been deceived by flattering words and by the dignity of the persuader. For Acacius was not considered an ordinary man, being clever by nature in understanding and speaking and in putting his plans into action, and presiding over a distinguished church, and boasting of Eusebius Pamphili, after whom he held his episcopate, as his teacher, and claiming to know more than others through the reputation and succession of his books. And being such a man, he easily arranged whatever he wished. 4.23.3 While the twenty from each synod and others who happened to be residing in the city were in Constantinople, at first Honoratus was commissioned to judge the inquiry against Aetius, with the leaders from the great council present, whom the emperor, not long before having returned from the government of the west, had appointed first prefect of Constantinople. 4.23.4 But later, when Constantius himself with the magistrates gave his judgment, Aetius was detected as being malevolent concerning the faith, so that both the emperor and the others were enraged at his blasphemous words.
