Therefore his brothers envied him for this reason. And envying him, they proceeded openly to a plot, and wishing to kill him they cast him into a terrible pit. But at the suggestion of one of them, namely Reuben, since he was friendly 272 toward him, they both brought him out of the pit, and according to the history of Josephus they sell him to the merchants for twenty minas. After these things, returning to their father, they said they had not seen Joseph, but had found his tunic bloodied and torn, so as to give the suspicion from this that he had perhaps been destroyed by wild beasts. Therefore he is brought down by the merchants into Egypt, and is sold there as a slave. Not long after, he is drawn into indecent desires by his mistress. But he did not consent; for though a slave in body, he was free in mind. For which reason he also moves her to anger. She plots against him, accuses him, persuades [someone] to cast him into prison. These things happen, and for thirteen years he was imprisoned; and in that same prison were two others, a cupbearer and a baker, to whom indeed he marvelously foretold things to come. And to the cupbearer he foretold freedom within three days; for he saw grapes being squeezed by him from three vines into a cup, and the king graciously receiving it from him. Wherefore he also said to him, 'Do not despise us for these things when you depart; for having done no wrong we are in bonds, but for the sake of self-control we were condemned to endure the lot of evildoers. 273' But to the baker, who said he was carrying three baskets upon his head, two full of loaves, and the third of relishes and various foods, and that birds flying down were consuming everything, and who expected from this that the prophecy would be similar to the cupbearer's, he said that he had two whole days still to live; for the baskets signified this, and that on the third day he would be crucified and become food for the birds. The king celebrates his birthday, and at that time the things of the prophecy come to pass. The cupbearer forgets this. Two years pass by. he sees
ἐνδότερον δέ εἰσιν ἄνθρωποι ἀνθρώπους ἐσθίοντες. Χαλδαίοις νόμος μητρογαμεῖν καὶ ἀδελφοτεκνοφθορεῖν. παρ' Ἀγιλαίοις αἱ γυναῖκες
αὐθεντοῦσι τῶν ἀνδρῶν καὶ πορνεύουσιν ὡς βούλονται, μὴ ζηλοτυπούμεναι παρὰ τῶν ἀνδρῶν αὐτῶν, γεωργίαν δὲ καὶ οἰκοδομίαν καὶ
πάντα τὰ ἀνδρῷα πράττουσιν. ἐν δὲ Βρεττανίᾳ πλεῖστοι ἄνδρες μιᾷ συγκαθεύδουσι γυναικὶ καὶ πολλαὶ γυναῖκες ἑνὶ ἀνδρί. Ἀμαζόνες
δὲ ἄνδρας οὐκ ἔχουσιν, ἀλλ' ὡς τὰ ἄλογα κατὰ τὸ ἔαρ τοῖς γειτνιῶσι μίγνυνται, καὶ μέγα πανηγυρίζουσαι οἴκαδε ἀποστρέφουσι,
καὶ κατὰ τὸν καιρὸν τῆς κυήσεως τὸ μὲν ἄρρεν ἀναιροῦσι, τὸ δὲ θῆλυ ζωογονοῦσι. Ταῦτα μὲν οὖν πάντα νόμος τοῖς κατὰ τόπους
ἔθνεσιν ἐκ διαδοχῆς κατὰ τὸν μέγαν Καισαριον γέγονε. μετὰ μέντοι 271 τὴν Ἀλεξάνδρου τελευτὴν εἰς πολλὰς ἀρχὰς ἡ βασιλεία αὐτοῦ
διῃρέθη, καὶ οὐ διέλειπον ἀεὶ κατ' ἀλλήλων ἐπανιστάμενοι, ἕως οὗ ἡ Ῥωμαίων ἀρχὴ τὰς τοπαρχίας πάσας κατέλυσε. καὶ περὶ μὲν
τούτων οὕτως. Ὁ δὲ Ἰακὼβ γεννᾷ τοὺς δώδεκα πατριάρχας, τὸν Ῥου-βίμ, τὸν Συμεών, τὸν Λευί, τὸν Ἰουδὰν καὶ τοὺς λοιποὺς καθεξῆς.
ἠγάπα δὲ τὸν Ἰωσὴφ πλέον τῶν ἄλλων καὶ διὰ τὸ νεώτατον αὐτὸν εἶναι καὶ διὰ τὴν προσοῦσαν αὐτῷ ἀρετήν. ἐφ' ᾧ καὶ φθονοῦσιν
αὐτῷ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ. οὐ διὰ ταῦτα δὲ μόνον, ἀλλὰ καὶ διὰ τὰς ὁράσεις ὧν ἐκεῖνος γέγονε θεωρός. ἑώρα γὰρ ἀστέρας ἕνδεκα,
σὺν αὐτοῖς τε τὸν ἥλιον καὶ τὴν σελήνην, προσκυνοῦντας αὐτόν. καὶ οἱ μὲν ἀστέρες ἐδήλουν τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς αὐτοῦ, ὁ ἥλιος τὸν
πατέρα, ἡ δὲ σελήνη τὴν μητέρα. εἰ δὲ λέγει τις, πῶς ἡ μήτηρ λέγεται προσκυνῆσαι, ἐπεὶ προαποθανεῖν ἔφθασεν, ἀκουέτω ὅτι τοῦ
Ἰακὼβ κατελθόντος ἐν Αἰγύπτῳ καὶ προσκυνήσαντος συμπροσκυνῆσαι λέγεται καὶ ἡ γυνὴ αὐτοῦ, ὅτι καὶ σῶμα ἓν ἀμφότεροι οὗτοι.
οὐκοῦν ἐφθόνουν αὐτῷ διὰ τοῦτο οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ. καὶ φθονοῦντες εἰς ἐπιβουλὴν προδήλως χωροῦσι, καὶ θανατῶσαι θέλοντες αὐτὸν
ἐμβάλλουσι λάκκῳ δεινῷ. ἑνὸς δέ τινος ὑποθήκαις, δηλαδὴ τοῦ Ῥουβὶμ ἅτε πρὸς αὐτὸν φι272 λίως διακειμένου, τοῦ λάκκου τε αὐτὸν
ἐξάγουσι, καὶ κατὰ τὴν τοῦ Ἰωσήπου ἱστορίαν εἴκοσι μνῶν τοῖς ἐμπόροις ἀποδιδόασι. μετὰ δὲ ταῦτα πρὸς τὸν πατέρα ἐπιστρέψαντες
τὸν μὲν Ἰωσὴφ ἔλεγον μὴ ἰδεῖν, χιτῶνα δὲ τούτου εὑρεῖν ᾑμαγμένον καὶ λελακισμένον, ὡς ἐντεῦθεν ὑπόνοιαν τάχα διδόναι παρὰ
θηρίων αὐτὸν ἀπολέσθαι. κατάγεται οὖν παρὰ τῶν ἐμπόρων εἰς Αἴγυπτον, καὶ ὡς δοῦλος ἐκεῖσε πιπράσκεται. οὐ πολὺ τὸ ἐν μέσῳ,
καὶ εἰς ἔρωτας ἀσέμνους παρὰ τῆς κυρίας αὐτοῦ ἐφέλκεται. ὁ δὲ οὐκ ἐπείθετο· εἰ γὰρ καὶ τὸ σῶμα δοῦλος, ἀλλὰ τὴν γνώμην ἐλεύθερος.
ἐφ' ᾧ καὶ πρὸς ὀργὴν αὐτὴν κινεῖ. μελετᾷ κατ' αὐτοῦ, κατηγορεῖ, πείθει εἰς φυλακὴν αὐτὸν ἐμβαλεῖν. γίνεται ταῦτα, καὶ τρισκαίδεκα
ἔτεσιν κατάκλειστος ἦν· τῇ δὲ τοιαύτῃ φυλακῇ καὶ ἕτεροι δύο συνῆσαν, οἰνοχόος τε καὶ ἀρτοποιός· οἷς δὴ παραδόξως καὶ τὰ ἐσόμενα
προηγόρευσε. καὶ τῷ μὲν οἰνοχόῳ ἐλευθερίαν προέλεγε διὰ τριῶν ἐμμένειν ἡμερῶν· ἑώρα γὰρ ἐκ τριῶν κλημάτων ἀποθλιβομένους βότρυας
δι' αὐτοῦ εἰς φιάλην, καὶ τὸν βασιλέα χαριέντως ἐξ αὐτοῦ ταύτην λαμβάνοντα. ὅθεν καὶ πρὸς αὐτὸν ἔλεγε μὴ ὑπερίδῃς ἡμᾶς δια
ταῦτα ἀπερχόμενος· οὐδὲν γὰρ ἁμαρτόντες ἐν δεσμοῖς γεγόναμεν, ἀλλὰ σωφροσύνης ἕνεκα τὰ τῶν κακούργων ὑπομένειν κατεκρίθη273
μεν.» τῷ δὲ ἀρτοποιῷ λέγοντι τρία κανᾶ φέρειν ὑπὲρ κεφαλῆς ἑαυτοῦ, καὶ δύο μὲν ἄρτων πλέα, τὸ δὲ τρίτον ὄψων τε καὶ ποικίλων
βρωμάτων, καταπταμένους δὲ οἰωνοὺς ἅπαντα δαπανᾶν, κἀντεῦθεν προσδοκῶντι ὁμοίαν τῷ οἰνοχόῳ τὴν πρόρρησιν ἔσεσθαι, δύο τὰς
πάσας ἔτι τοῦ ζῇν ἔλεγεν ἔχειν ἡμέρας· τὰ γὰρ κανᾶ τοῦτο σημαίνειν, τῇ τρίτῃ δὲ αὐτὸν σταυρωθέντα βορὰν ἔσεσθαι πετεινοῖς.
γενέθλιον ἐπιτελεῖ ὁ βασιλεύς, καὶ τηνικαῦτα τὰ τῆς προρρήσεως γίνεται. ἐπιλανθάνεται τούτου ὁ οἰνοχόος. ἐνιαυτοὶ δύο παρέρχονται.
