brothers and sons of God and gods by adoption, abide in God and God in them by grace?
Those therefore who have not become such, nor have been changed at all in action and knowledge and contemplation, how are they not ashamed to call themselves Christians? And how do they dare to open their mouth and speak shamelessly about the hidden mysteries of God, while lying upon negligence as upon a bed? How do they not blush to be numbered with Christians? How do they not shudder to become seated with the priests and celebrants and ministers of the Master's body and blood? From this I am completely at a loss, but the blindness, as has been said, of the mind and the accompanying insensibility and ignorance and the conceit born from these, prepares them to trample as if it were mud the true gold, the most precious stone, our Lord Jesus Himself, the Christ. O the frightful audacity, which makes them step upon a high pedestal and stand upon it, so that each of them may be shown to be superior to the many and be admired. Such men as these, then, what Christian will call Christians?
But these things are addressed to those who attempt to know and say everything and suppose themselves to be something, when they are nothing; as on an inscription in this discourse, we have shown what sort and of what kind Christians are, so that by comparing themselves to the archetype, they may know how far they fall short of Christians in truth. But to you, servants of Christ and who are eager to learn and have prepared your hearing, the Master (229) of all cries out through His holy Gospels, saying: "While you have the light, run to the light, that darkness may not overtake you." Run through repentance in the way of His commandments, run, run until the time of His illumination, before the night of death overtakes you and you are delivered over to eternal darkness. Run, seek, knock, so that the gate of the kingdom of heaven may be opened for you and you may be within it and possess it within you. For those who depart from this life before possessing it, where will they ever find it when they have gone there? Here, therefore, we have been commanded to ask and seek and knock in repentance and tears, and to those who do so the Master has promised to give it to us. If therefore we are not willing to do this and to obey the Master Christ, so that while still living we may hasten to receive the kingdom within us, will we not justly hear Him say to us when we have gone there: "What do you seek now, which you refused to receive when it was being given to you by Me? Did you not, when I often exhorted you to labor and receive it from Me, refuse, but despised it and preferred the enjoyment of corruptible and earthly things? By what works or words, then, will you be able to find it from now on?"
For this reason, therefore, fathers and brothers, I beseech you, let us keep the commandments of our God with all diligence, so that we may attain both life and an eternal kingdom and may we not hear now: "He who does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath (230) of God remains on him", and in the age to come: "Depart from me, I do not know you, where you are from", but may we hearken to that blessed voice saying "Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you, because you fed me, who was hungry for your salvation, through the working of my commandments, you gave me drink, you clothed me, you gathered me and you came to me, having cleansed your hearts from every stain and filth of sin; therefore enjoy my good things, the enjoyment of which is ineffable and eternal life and

ἀδελφοί καί υἱοί Θεοῦ καί θέσει θεοί, μένουσιν ἐν τῷ Θεῷ καί ὁ Θεός ἐν αὐτοῖς κατά χάριν;
Οἱ οὖν μή γεγονότες τοιοῦτοι, μηδέ πράξει καί γνώσει καί θεωρίᾳ καθόλου ἀλλοιωθέντες, πῶς οὐκ αἰσχύνονται χριστιανούς ἑαυτούς ὀνομάζειν; Πῶς δέ καί στόμα τολμῶσιν ἀνοίγειν καί λαλεῖν ἀναιδῶς περί τῶν μυστηρίων Θεοῦ τῶν ἀποκεκρυμμένων, ἐπί ἀμελείας ὡς ἐπί στρωμνῆς κατακείμενοι; Πῶς μετά χριστιανῶν συναριθμεῖν οὐκ ἐρυθριῶσι; Πῶς τῶν ἱερέων συγκάθεδροι καί τοῦ σώματος καί αἵματος τοῦ ∆εσποτικοῦ ἱερουργοί καί λειτουργοί οὐ φρίττουσι γίνεσθαι; Ὅλως ἔνθεν ἐπαπορῶ, ἀλλ᾿ ἡ τύφλωσις, ὡς εἴρηται, τοῦ νοός καί ἡ συνεπομένη ἀναισθησία καί ἄγνοια καί ἡ τικτομένη ἐκ τούτων οἴησις, ὡς πηλόν παρασκευάζει πατεῖν τόν ὄντως χρυσόν, τόν τιμιώτατον λίθον, αὐτόν τόν Κύριον ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦν, τόν Χριστόν. Ὤ τῆς φρικτῆς τόλμης, ὡς ἐπί βάθραν ὑψηλήν ἐπιβαίνειν αὐτούς ποιεῖ καί ἵστασθαι ἐπ᾿ αὐτήν, ἵν᾿ ἕκαστος τούτων τοῖς πολλοῖς ὑπερέχων δείκνυται καί περίβλεπτος. Χριστιανούς οὖν τούς τοιούτους, ποῖος ἄρα χριστιανός ὀνομάσει;
