being annoyed that he was disturbing the crowds, they rebuked and forbade him to speak, remembering the Lord's distinction and warning to watchfully guard against the presence of false prophets; but they, puffed up as with a holy spirit and prophetic gift, and becoming not a little vain, and forgetting the distinction of the Lord, summoned the mind-injuring and cajoling and people-deceiving spirit, being charmed and deceived by it, so that they could no longer be silenced. 5.16.9 But by a certain art, or rather by such a method of evil artifice, the devil, having contrived the destruction of the disobedient and being honored by them beyond his worth, secretly stirred up and further inflamed their mind, which had fallen asleep from the true faith, so as to rouse two other women and fill them with the counterfeit spirit, so that they spoke frenziedly and inopportunely and in a strange manner, like the man mentioned before. And while the spirit pronounced blessed those who rejoiced and were puffed up at it and inflated them through the greatness of its promises, sometimes it would also condemn them directly, with plausible guesswork and credibility, so that it might also seem to be able to rebuke—and these were a few of the Phrygians who were deceived—while the insolent spirit taught them to blaspheme the catholic and entire church under heaven, because the false-prophetic spirit received neither honor nor access into it, 5.16.10 for when the faithful in Asia had often and in many places of Asia assembled for this purpose and had examined the recent utterances and declared them profane and rejected the heresy, so indeed they were cast out of the church and excluded from the communion.” 5.16.11 Having related these things in the first parts, and having brought forward the refutation of their error throughout the whole work, in the second he says these things concerning the death of the aforementioned persons: 5.16.12 “Since, then, they called us prophet-slayers, because we did not receive their babbling prophets (for they say that these are the ones whom the Lord promised to send to the people), let them answer us, for God's sake: Is there any one, O most excellent sirs, of those who began to speak from Montanus and the women, who was persecuted by the Jews or killed by the lawless? No one. Nor was any of them seized and crucified for the Name, was he? Certainly not. Nor indeed was any of the women ever scourged in the synagogues of the Jews, or stoned? 5.16.13 Nowhere, by no means. But Montanus and Maximilla are said to have died another death. For a strong rumor and report has it that both of them, urged on by a mind-injuring spirit, hanged themselves—not together, but each at the time of his own end—and so died and ended their life in the manner of Judas the traitor, 5.16.14 just so, a widespread report holds concerning that wonderful Theodotus, who was the first steward, so to speak, of their so-called prophecy, that once, on being lifted up and taken into the heavens, he was ecstatic and entrusted himself to the spirit of deceit, and was hurled down and died miserably. At any rate, they say this happened so. 5.16.15 But let us not suppose, blessed sir, that we know any 5.16.15 of these things without having seen them; for perhaps Montanus and Theodotus and the aforementioned woman died thus, and perhaps not thus.” 5.16.16 Again in the same discourse he says that the holy bishops of that time attempted to refute the spirit in Maximilla, but were prevented by others, who were, of course, cooperating with the spirit; 5.16.17 and he writes thus: “And let not the spirit that speaks through Maximilla say in the same discourse against Asterius Orbanus: ‘I am driven away like a wolf from the sheep; I am not a wolf; I am word and spirit and power,’ but let it clearly show and prove the power in the spirit, and let it compel those who were then present to confess through the spirit in order to
