there was also the destruction of the temple. But Nehemiah, being released, came to Jerusalem and rebuilt it; for it had lain desolate for 70 years. And the same Artaxerxes, having been entreated by some of his senate, also released the remaining Jews. And whoever wished to go up to Jerusalem at that time, went up with Ezra the prophet and leader, to whom he also entrusted the priestly vessels and the priestly 1.245 books that were found. And the same Ezra, from his own recollection, caused the substance of the books that were not found to be written down. And in these times the country of Macedonia was ruled, in which Cranaus first reigned for 28 years, and 26 other kings until Philip, the father of Alexander. At that time the Greek teachers and poets were Sophocles, Heraclitus, Euripides, Herodotus, Socrates, and the great Pythagoras. And Heracles was born in the aforementioned earlier times, in Lato of Thebes, being of the race of Alcmene and Picus Zeus; who was raised in the country of Spain, and having become a brave man, he then fled from the Spaniards to Italy, and reigned in it for 38 years. He took to wife Lytbe, the daughter of king Atletus; for which reason the Italian kings, or reges, of his race also erected for him pillars wrought of gold, which pillars stand to the present day. And his son by Auge, Telephus, reigned over Italy, and after him his son Latinus for 18 years, who named the Cetaeans Latins. Then Aeneas, the son of Anchises, the Phrygian, fleeing from the sack of Ilium, went up into Libya to the Phoenician Dido, also called Elissa. And having tarried there, he left her secretly, and fled, fearing Iarbas, king of Africa. Dido was from the small city of Chartike, being on the coast of Phoenicia, 1.246 between the borders of Tyre and Sidon; which Dido was very wealthy, having a husband Sychaeus, whom Dido's brother Pygmalion murdered during a hunt, being jealous of him as one who was very rich and powerful. For while pursuing a wild boar on horseback, he drove his spear into him from behind and killed him, and taking his body, he threw it down a cliff. And returning, he told those who were with him that he had fallen off the cliff while pursuing the wild boar. And the same Pygmalion wished also to do away with his own sister and take her wealth; to whom, Dido, her husband Sychaeus appeared in a vision and said that "your brother murdered me," showing her also the place of the wound. And he said to her, "flee, lest he murder you also." And so the same Dido, deceiving her own brother, took all her wealth, and embarking on a ship, she sailed away from Phoenicia, and came to Libya, and founded Chartagaina, which is Neapolis; and she reigned in it, and died, having lived chastely. Diomedes was from Aetolia, tracing his lineage from Oeneus, which Oeneus after the death of Eriboea married Althaea, from whom he had Meleager and Deianira, whom Achelous, son of the senator Poseidonius, betrothed. Achelous, then, before the marriage, secretly corrupted Deianira, and after this he says to king Oeneus, "I will not take her otherwise, unless you cede to me the administration of your kingdom." But he was not persuaded. And so Achelous, son of Poseidonius, 1.247 together with his own father, rose up against Oeneus and made war on him. And being compelled, Oeneus summoned from the land of Phthia a noble general, Heracles, who was called Polyphemus, promising to give him his daughter Deianira; who, coming with his army, joined battle with Poseidonius and his son Achelous, and in the engagement Polyphemus slew with a sword Poseidonius, the father of Achelous. For this reason the poets set forth that Heracles tore off the horn of Achelous, which is his paternal power. Seeing, therefore, the
