of the angels in the glory of his Father, at the consummation of the present age; there he crowns the genuine confessor; but the others, that is, those who have denied and dishonored him, will be denied; the Judge almost saying to them what was said to some through the holy prophets: As you have done, so shall it be to you; "Your recompense will be returned upon your head." And he will deny them, saying this: "Depart from me, workers of iniquity; I do not know you." And who might these be? First, those who, when persecution befell them, cast away the faith; and likewise the children and teachers of heretics deny him, both Arians and the disciples of the empty talk of Nestorius. 9Whoever speaks a word against the Son of man, etc.9 (A f. 167, B f. 121 b) How then is it fitting to understand this? For if the Savior wishes to declare this, that if some insulting word is said by us against a common man, he will have forgiveness upon repenting, the saying is freed for us from all difficulty; for God, being good by nature, frees from accusations those who choose to repent; but if the saying comes to him, the Savior of all, Christ, how is one who has spoken a word against himself without blame or even beyond judgment? We say, then, that when someone, not yet having learned the power of the mystery concerning him, nor yet knowing that, being God by nature, he humbled himself to our state and was called man, says something moderate about him, and whatever is worthy of pardon, these things God forgives those who have sinned out of ignorance. For example; Christ said somewhere: "I am the living bread, who came down from heaven, and gives life to the world;" but some, ignorant of his glory, and thinking him to be a common man, were saying: "Is not this the carpenter's son, whose father and mother we know? How then does he say, 'I have come down from heaven'?" And again; He once stood teaching in a Synagogue, and was marveled at by all, but some, it says, were saying: "How does this man know letters, having never learned?" For they were ignorant that in him were hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge. These things are worthy of pardon, as having been spoken carelessly out of ignorance. But for those who have blasphemed against the Divine itself, inescapable 72.732 is the judgment, and perpetual the punishment both in this world and in the one to come. And by Spirit in these things he means not only the Holy, but rather the whole nature of the Godhead. And the Savior himself also said somewhere that God is spirit; therefore, blasphemy against the Spirit would be against the whole of the highest of all essences; for the nature of the Godhead is one, understood in the holy and adorable Trinity. 9Do not be anxious how or what you will answer.9 (A f. 170) The Lord, having suspended so much fear, and having prepared them to nobly resist those who cause them to fall away from the right confession, commands them not to be anxious about other things, that is, about their defense; because for those who are faithfully and lovingly disposed, the Spirit works the fitting words, as a teacher dwelling within. 9Who made me a judge or an arbitrator over you?9 (A f. 171, Ε f. 190) The Son has indeed been appointed by God the Father, when he appeared in our likeness, as both ruler and king over Zion his holy mountain, according to the voice of the Psalmist. And what he is to accomplish, he himself again makes clear. For I have come, he says, announcing the command of the Lord. And what is this? for our virtue-loving Master wishes us, to depart from every earthly and temporary matter, not contending with brothers, but rather yielding to them, even if they wish to take advantage. "For from the one who takes," he says, "what is yours, do not demand it back;" but seeking rather whatever things are useful and necessary for the salvation of the soul. For those accustomed to live thus, Christ establishes laws, according to which they might become brilliant and admirable; for he said: "Acquire neither silver, nor gold, nor two tunics, nor a bag, nor
