memorial. And again: "my bones were scattered by Hades," those who confess and repent say. But by this Hades which is customarily spoken of, the bones of the body cannot be scattered. And if they were, as some say, under the moon, the bones of the dead are not there. But when the powers of the soul, which on account of their vigor are called bones, fall under sin, "they were scattered by Hades," no longer preserving their proper harmony. 12 I became a reproach to all my enemies, and very much so to my neighbors. They used to say that this psalm, like those before it, is also spoken from the person of the Savior according to the man. "I became a reproach to all my enemies." He alludes to the cross; for he says in another psalm, which Paul took to be from the person of the Savior, the words: "The reproaches of those who reproached you fell upon me." I took them upon myself. Some reproach you, O Father or O God, and these reproaches fell upon me. And no wonder; often even a man of science, when he sees people mocking science, draws the reproaches to himself. His enemies are those who sin. For this has been said: "For if while we were enemies we were reconciled." The one who sins is an enemy of God, not God an enemy of him; for God is an enemy of no one. "and very much so to my neighbors." His neighbors are those who profess to know his scripture and call themselves his participants. "Very much so" then; for instance, let the gentiles be enemies; for they sin and are impious. I have become a reproach to all of them, as one who endured the cross, as one who went down to death. "and very much so to my neighbors." But when those who ought to draw near to me and profess to have their own buildings near me do the same things as my enemies, the reproach from them has become very great. 12 and a fear to my acquaintances. Those who know me, having seen me suffer these things, had a fear equal to reverence, or had a fear of not suffering the same things. 12 those who saw me outside fled from me. Those who saw me before this, having seen the things that happened concerning me, have become outside of me, not sent away by me, but they fled outside. Everyone fleeing Jesus becomes outside of him, outside of salvation. 13 I have been forgotten like one dead from the heart. The enemies who reproached me and the neighbors who did this very much cast me out from their hearts. For the dead are quickly forgotten. Indeed, those who suffer misfortunes say thus: "3from when the dead man was laid out, is wiped away"3, he says, "3the grief from the soul"3. Indeed, men are eager to do this quickly. "I have been forgotten" therefore "from the heart." They cast me out from their heart; for they did not have me unmixedly as the apostle says: "but Christ lives in me." I no longer lived in them. When someone having the word in himself no longer acts according to it, as far as it concerns him, he has put it to death and is in forgetfulness of it. But hear of forgetfulness in this way, not as if not knowing that he once had him; for many such things are said both in common usage and in scripture. For we often say to friends: "3You have already forgotten me"3, not meaning by this, that "3you do not have me in memory at all"3. But scripture says: "the affliction of an hour causes forgetfulness of luxury." Just now 145 the one afflicted for an hour forgets luxury. And again: "and they shall forget," he says, "their former affliction, and it shall not come up upon their heart." Thus you think, that he who is outside of affliction forgets it. Since indeed: "I became a reproach to all my enemies"? —he did not say "to all men," but "my enemies." And the enemies are the wicked men, not righteous ones, enemies by disposition; for he himself is an enemy of no one, but many are enemies of him. "Hear the word of the Lord, you who tremble at his word; say, our brothers, to those who hate you." They hate and are enemies. But you, he says, call them "brothers," not with the voice, not with speech, but
