an order to do what seemed good to him, and he wrote to Hermogenes the prefect and to the governor of Syria, who and where should be transferred, and when the emperor recalled these men from exile, he did not permit it, 4.24.6 opposing rulers and priests. They added that he had also incited the clergy in Sirmium against Germanius, and, being in communion with him and with Valens and Ursacius, he slandered them in writing to the bishops of Africa, and when accused, he denied it and perjured himself, and when caught, he attempted to explain away the perjury, and he became a cause of dissension and sedition for Illyrians and Italians and Africans and of the events that occurred concerning the church of the Romans,4.24.7 and being eager for a female slave to be imprisoned, he forced her to make false confessions against her mistress, and a man caught for sorcery and having lived shamefully, not even cohabiting with a woman in lawful marriage, he both baptized and deemed worthy of the diaconate, a visiting presbyter 4.24.8 who had become the cause of murders he did not separate from the church, and that at the holy table he was making conspiracies, both taking an oath himself and preparing the clergy to swear not to accuse one another; and that this was a device for him, as head of the clergy, to escape the accusations of his accusers. These, then, to speak briefly, were the causes they adduced for the deposition of Basil; 4.24. of Eustathius, first, that when he was a presbyter his father Eulalius had condemned him and excluded him from the prayers, being bishop of the church of Caesarea in Cappadocia, and after this he was excommunicated by a synod in Neocaesarea of Pontus and was deposed by Eusebius, the bishop of Constantinople, being condemned for certain administrative matters with which he had been entrusted, then, because he was teaching and acting and thinking improperly, he was deprived of his episcopate by those assembled at Gangra, and at the synod in Antioch he was convicted of perjury; and that he attempts to overturn the decisions of those who assembled at Melitene, and though guilty of very many crimes, he presumed to be a judge 4.24.10 and called the others heretics. And they deposed Eleusius because a certain Heraclius, a Tyrian by race, who had been a priest of the Heracles there, who was accused of sorcery and was wanted, and for this reason was a fugitive staying in Cyzicus, feigning Christianity, he incautiously deemed worthy of the ministry of God, and not even when he learned afterwards that he was such a person did he separate him from the church, and because he ordained without examination men who had been condemned by Maris, the bishop of Chalcedon, who was in communion with this synod, when they came to Cyzicus. 4.24.11 They deposed Heortasius because he had become bishop of Sardis without the consent of the bishops in Lydia, and Dracontius of Pergamum because he had formerly been bishop in Galatia; and they nullified the ordination in each case as unlawful. 4.24.12 In addition to these, assembling again, they depose Silvanus the bishop of Tarsus and Sophronius of Pompeiopolis of the Paphlagonians, and Elpidius of Satala and Neon of Seleucia in Isauria. 4.24.13 And they deposed Silvanus as having become a ringleader of recklessness for the others both in Seleucia and Constantinople and for having appointed Theophilus over the church in Castabala, who had previously been ordained bishop of Eleutheropolis by the bishops of Palestine and had sworn not to enter upon another bishopric against their will, 4.24.14 and Sophronius for attempting to profit by and make merchandise of the offerings to the church and after a first and second summons, when he finally appeared, for being unwilling to defend himself before them against the charges, 4.24.15 but choosing outside judges, and Neon because in his own church he had pushed for Annianus to be ordained bishop of the Antiochenes and had appointed as bishops certain men who were inexperienced in the sacred scriptures and church canons and conducted themselves incautiously, who afterwards preferred the acquisition of money to the priesthood and chose in writing
